I was just wondering what the exact reason(s) could be for the 87-91 L98 heads having such small combustion chambers could be?
Do the smaller chambers require less fuel to make the sufficient power? I realize since their smaller they create a higher compression ratio also. Is this how the later L98s were able to make more power? How much did they make toward 91?
In '88 the design switched to (#113) "D"-shaped exhaust ports which gave an additional 10hp (masked by the "frisbee") and in '90 the piston design was changed to give higher compression and a 5hp boost.
With any setup the CR is probably one most important aspect. So design/intent of the motors was probably designed with that being the optimum CC for the head. it both achieved what they were after as far as performance/emmissions/durability.
