My shifter is out of alignement with the letters on the shift column, and I sometimes have to give it a little extra nudge to allow it to actually go into park. If I dont nudge the shifter forward, the igntion wont allow the key to come out, and when the motor is off, the car will actually roll till I push the shifter forward. Where is the adjustment, do I take the pan off?
Same problem on my 94 shifter last year. Also, mine had a tendency to want to jump into neutral out of "O". Brought it in to Chevy, they said no adjustment possible - could only be a worn shifter. had it replaced - $100
There are two different cables coming off of your shifter assembly. I don't think there is any way to adjust the shifter, maybe one of your mounting screws have come loose. One of the cables goes to the steering column the other to the trans. If you take apart your console assembly, you will see what I'm talking about. Good luck
This is what one from a 96 looks like with the steering column cable removed.
If it's simply a matter of the letters being out of alignment, it's a relatively easy fix. You'll have to remove the shift **** and console trim (not hard at all).
Once you have these off, you'll notice that there's a plastic piece with grooves in it to align with the shift **** itself. It may be that one of the plastic "prongs" is broken and it's not keeping the letters aligned with the actual shift position...
The hardest part about this job is getting the snap ring off the **** (my snap ring pliers were broken when I did it and I ended up using two long nails).
The shifter itself is not aligned. When I push it all the way forward for "park" it doesn tgo all the way into park. If I am on a hill, it will not be in park and wont allow me to take the key out till I push it forward, till the **** in the center of the shifter clicks up. SO the shifter is not correctly in gear.
Ahhh, okay. Get under the car (while it's on jackstands) and have somebody run through the gears. You'll see where the shift linkage is when they're doing this. Make sure everything is loose - if not, the cable could be shot (as in earlier posts) or the manual linkage could be bad. If it's the latter, tranny pan removal is required to see what exactly is going on with it. There's a detent spring in there that might be binding.
You said that you where having trouble with both your steering column and your gear selection. Also, when you nudge it forward you can remove the key and put it in park. This says that your cables are both working properly. These two cables are attached to either side of the shifter mechanism. You either have a shifter that is not seated properly or is no longer functional. :D
