Ok, some of you may recall I had posted about oil smoke in a general discussion topic a few weeks ago. Fact of the matter is it was my Vette that had a puff smoke problem on warm startup. The conclussion I came to was that is was most likely a valve guide/top end problem since I do not have any smoke during regular running, so I don't believe it is a ring problem. Due to the many responses, I had concluded it would indeed be in my best interest to pull the heads and rebuild them before I plan on selling the car next Summer.
So....
Where to start? Not looking for super mods, just need to get information on a good place to get info, rebuild kits, anything I might need to tackle this problem myself. I have done all the work on my own thus far, including changing water pumps, so I have been into the belly of the beast somewhat already.
Pick up a repair manual at Pep Boys, Autozone, or whatever chain is in your area. It will give you most of the information about pulling the heads. As far as being able to do the head rebuild yourself, forget it. Take it to a shop that does that kind of work. By the time you purchase all the equipment necessary to grind valves and seats, install new guides, check for warpage and mill the heads if necessary, etc, you could buy a new engine with the money.
