Yet another digital dash question, but this one seems a little different from normal. My tach is completely lit up, all the time. The right side of the center cluster is half lit up: some segments work and some don't. Oil pressure is ok, but oil temp never comes above low (could this be a separate problem?). Fuel gauge is also all lit up. Speedo is fine.
I took apart the cluster per Batee's site, cleaned the LCD's, rubbers, and retouched a few cold solder joints, but it didn't help anything. Does anyone have any ideas? If not, where is the best place to send it for repair/exchange?
I called this guy to ask a few questions to verify I wasn't missing any wiring issues, he got upset that I would dare question him and told me to go elsewhere, he even called back again to tell me to go somewhere else. I sent it to Southern Electronics in Va. had it back in a week $255 with a new power supply, works great.
That guy is an absolute JERK! I forget his name, (Begins with a T maybe?), but he runs that digidash repair under several different names.
One time i cracked my speedo panel by overtightening a screw inside the unit. He flat out told me "THATS IMPOSSIBLE, you don't know what you're doing and I won't sell you the pane, send the whole thing in."
Well F YOU buddy!
I couldn't believe he told me that as a customer. I was able to get a replacement pane for $50 at a junkyard and had it installed and working in 10 minutes.
I too am having "issues" with the cluster in my 85. Everything is working and the information seems to be fine except that the speedo and tach are sunburnt. Very difficult to see how fast I'm going. Very bad! The center cluster; fuel and temp guages are pristine.
I would hazard that your oil temp sender is either disconnected or faulty and your fuel level sender is grounded somewhere. I can't see that the cluster alone would give you those indications without faulty input from the senders. Just my .02...
But can anyone help with a suggestion for sunburnt displays? The options I've found so far seem to be limited to placing myself at the mercy of others to the tune of nearly $1000.00. Send the cluster away for rebuild; $350. Additional charge for sunburnt displays in another $250 per!
that sun faded display you see is actually a colored ribbon behind the lcd panels. the display segments are the lcd turning on or off allowing the color ribbon to show thru. sorry for the running on. to make a long story short you need to find a broken display that is not sun faded. you can change the ribbon- but a word of caution--- you must be electronicaly experienced- it comes apart and goes back together like a watch. the lcd panels fit in the frame one way. if they are a little off when reassembling the cluster- you will break the lcd panel- not good!! i rebuilt my own and i wish you luck
