Think of it as a normal 4 speed...with an overdriven version switchable. The OD defaults (for fuel economy) until you either hit the button on the shifter...or mash it and it will downshift out of overdrive...like an automatic downshifts. When you relax the pedal again, it goes back to default OD again....
Do a search, this is a very common question here and many good (better) explanations are already out there.
More like a 4 speed with a powerglide on the rear which operates on 2nd 3rd and fourth to give 7 speeds. As stated it defaults into 0/d which can then be downshifted to direct drive manually or by opening the throttle just like a regular automatic.

Re: 4+3???
correction...
it's a 4 speed standard with a 2 speed automatic behind it.
Think of it in terms of a ten speed bike. Two gears in front times 5 gears in back equals 10 speeds.
They SHOULD call this the 4x2 transmission, not the 4+3. Problem is, there's only 7 speeds because the computer locks out 1st gear overdrive, and 4 times 2 doesn't equal 7.
I motion to call it the " 4 x 2 - 1 " lol.

My 86 is a 4X2...no first gear lock out...4+4 maybe?
Howdy scorp!
Ya mean like when your switch is bad and you put a jumper wire on the harness? I'm afraid to leave it that way 'cause I don't know what would happen when you take off from a stop.
How else would ya do it? :skep:
Nope, even in stock configuration it can and does occurr. Plus if you came to a stop it should drop out anyways because the low pressure switch will see that the pressure in the lines has fallen below spec when the rear wheels get to a certain speed.
