I won a raffle and they are giving me the choice of either a hypertech or jet chip. I know they both come in 2 flavors. Either with the stock t-stat or a lower temp t-stat. I have an 86 vette, that is pretty much stock right now, but I will be changing that as I go along. The guy at the shop suggested I go with a Jet stage 2, he says the vette will grow into it as I do the modss. I know I can't expect much gains since the car is stock, but free is free. Which should I go with?
Re: I won a performace chip. Which one should I get? (TA)
I agree, I seen some of Jets tuning, what a joke! I had a friend that paid $350 for custom tune and all they did was bump the base timing maps 3 degrees! And they didn't make an ajdustment for his larger injectors that was really needed. When I read his prom and told him he was on the phone that same minute tearing them a new a** hole! :mad
Re: I won a performace chip. Which one should I get? (86_Vette)
"Off the shelf chips" don't give any noticeable performance improvements - especially for a stock set-up. Usually when you buy an aftermarket prom, you need to supply them with all the vehicle modifications, as well as all the factory info, like transmission, motor etc.
I agree with the others pick hypertech and sell it on e-bay!
Grow into the mods? what kind of doo-doo is that? Make all the mods then have a good tuner CUSTOM program a prom to YOUR specifications!
Most all the big boys can custom program you a prom, check out Breathless Performance Products, Doug Rippie Motorsports, Lingenfelter or any of the Corvette Super Tuners!
They can program for maximum horsepower gains including: Gear Ratios, Emissions, High/Low Altitude, Shift Points, & Electronics etc. You will have to fill out a form with all your car's specifications for them to properly adjust the GM broadcast codes.
So how much do you think you'll gain with an off the shelf chip?
Answer: probably nothing even noticeable!
I'm not a mechanic, but judging by all my modifications... I've spoken with enough people & mechanics to know that an off the shelf chip is junk!
Once I finish building my ride I'm going to get rid of the "off the shelf" Hypertech prom & have a custom flash programmed chip installed.
Did I notice an increase in performance with my chip? Well, it was installed when my motor was rebuilt - so there were too many other modifications to tell. Seriously, I doubt it.
