GEORGE I don't think running the hose over to the beather like you describe will result in oil in the blower but since that would be more like a low pressure area instead of a vacuum a lot of people drill a hole and put the hose into the end of the filter. That will draw oil into the blower.
Yeah I'm imitating the old way, when you ran the PCV line up to your air cleaner. I'm not really trying to make a lot of vacuum in the crankcase; just relieve any pressure, and keep the spirit of emissions-legal by not venting to the atmosphere.
The vacuum pump is great for high RPM / compression race engines that need help w/ ring sealing (especially with thin ones that flutter.) But mine's < 6000rpm street motor; and so far my Total-Seal rings are doing a great job.
Speaking of which- somebody was asking about Zero-gap rings; I think they are a definite YES for forced induction. Higher cylinder pressures will cause more blowby; and pressure that gets past the rings doesn't exert force on correct side of the piston- plus it makes a general mess of the crankcase and oil. Now they have a zero-gap TOP ring which is probably even better that what I have. Just remember nothing brittle (cast) on top- you want ductile iron. :hurray:
This is a good topic guys I probably caught it a little too late and missed a couple of reply's. I was wondering if anyone mentioned the possibility of using a vacuum pump on the street . I'm gonna try it on my 406 C4 I'm currently building. I'd be the first to admit a may be a little overkill but in order to run the serpentine set-up on a 89 you can't just eliminate the air pump you'd have to replace it with a dummy pulley at least, as some of you probably already know. I decided if it's gotta be there I might as well make it useful and convert a air pump into a vacuum pump and not suck oily vapors into my intake charge that might lower the octane rating of the fuel among other things. GZ motorsports offered a conversion that wasn't too expensive and after talking to greg I was convinced I could make it live with a little maintenance. This was his first time doing it on a vette although he's done plenty for street Mustangs. I had a custom pulley fabricated by Greg because the stock air pump pulley was too small and would spin the pump too fast you want about 65% of crank speed. Anyway thi looks like it would work real good for some of you guys. I've posted some pics of the pump and pulley mocked up on my eng. I'll post results once I get the eng up and running. Good Luck!
I bought a 12 volt pump for mine going to use the pressure switch the turns on the water/alky injection it starts up at 7lbs. of boost so I will use a relay and turn on the vaccum pump at the same time. I don't need to run it all the time I have two lines too the exhaust collectors and it stoped the oil blowing but I"m hoping to get a better ring seal with the vaccum and that will be cheap horsepower and that is something that is always welcome. :smash:
Below the 7lb. boost the pump is not needed so I think this will work really good and the best part is I gave 20 bucks for the pump :D and it is almost new. :yesnod:
what location would you put the pump bart? the vacuum pump that is?
I have the digiatl-7 ignition box in the right side headlight well and the tank for Methanol injection in the left side headlight well. I put the electronic box for my wideband behind the fender under the battery their was a small cavity just big enough for it so now I only have one place left big enough for the pump the water tank for the windshield washers has to come out the pump will be mounted their. I mounter the DFI & MSD boost retard behind the dash also installed the electronic box for the fuel pressure gauge under the dash. Hard to find room for everything on one of these cars. I thought that this winter I would not have much to do but Now I have plans for so many things that it looks like I will be busy all winter again. Kev to bad the mods here don't like to hear about racing because I would love to tell you about the twin turbo supra that I ran but can't give any details so I will just say that every since we ran I can't get the :D off my face. :smash:
