Default Adjusting IAC Question For 86

I was checking out my IAC valve today and the pintel shot out while powering after removal. My manual states the distance from gasket to end of pintel should be no more than 1 1/8 of an inch.

Is that a fully extended or fully retracted measurement ??

Thanks
Dan

It really isn't an adjustment. It is the position the pintle should be in for reinstallation. This prevents damage to the pintle or it's seat during the install. As the manual should state, you'll have to warm up the engine and drive it at a speed of over 35 mph, if I remember correctly, for it to self-adjust. Good luck, and...

RACE ON!!!

Indeed you may have to retarct the unit before you can install it safely.

After the unit is installed you will need to set base idle to 450rpm (or close) and verify that the TPS value is correct for that idle speed.

After that the ECM should be able to maintain correct idle.

I measured my throttle body, If the pintle is out any more than 1-1/8", it will contact the throttle bore while screwing it in, and will probably damage it, or at least keep it from threading in all the way.

I couldn't get mine back in.. and ended up stripping out the little tangs that the keyed sides of the shaft slide on... with these stripped, the pintle wouldl just spin, and not extend in/out properly.

I ended up just buying a new one for 35 bucks

I thought I'd try and retract the pintle by hooking up a battery or something, but it's a stepper motor, so I have no idea how to do that.

btw, to answer your question, 1-1/8" is the fullly extended measurement.

It's measured from the base of the threads to the pintle tip.
