List your free mods!
hey guys, list all the free mods you know of. I'm low on money right now (because of interior) and still wanna be able to do stuff. so list your free mods or very cheap ones.

Re: List your free mods! (88 L98)
Here are a few free of los $$ mods:
-remove the "frisbee" disk from the front of the water pump pulley. - 10hp
-cut-back spark ground electrodes (method on my site). - 8-10hp
-cut air filter lid with K&N filter - 10hp
-TB coolant bypass. - ?? hp, but simplifies working on the TB
-remove spare & jack and use rubber tubing to isolate the carrier. - 40lbs (~5hp)
-160deg F thermostat & aux fan switch, then use my C4 Tech Tip to wire the aux fan switch to control both fans. - 10hp
-AFPR, no HP gain by itself but it is needed to add more fuel at WOT as you increase air flow.
The above changes should cost maybe $200 or less and some are virtually free save for labor involved.
When you get some $$ saved plan on doing exhaust upgrades like a hi-flow cat, cat-back and either full-length headers or a mandrel-bent front Y. These will give a very nice power boost.
Another "fun" and performance enhancer is a Trans-Go shift kit and 2,000rpm TC for your A4.
Have fun with the new toy.

Congrats on your ride. Wish I had folks like that. My first ride was a 69 chevy pickup LB. no ps, pb, or pw, hell it only had 55 mph A/C. Good Luck on your Car. Looks great already.

Re: List your free mods! (Lone Ranger)
Ported plenum
Ported exhaust manifolds
Cut air filter lid
Removed rear MAF screen
Spare tire & carrier delete
Throttle body coolant bypass
180 thermostat
Next, I plan to gut the smog pump, and maybe gut the cat.

Not trying to start trouble but I have a hard time believing that you'll get 43 - 45 hp from those mods.

Re: List your free mods! (Scoob)
Scoob, it pays to be skeptical, so no offense taken, but those numbers are what I gleaned from trap speed, normalized for weather conditions; the final HP number was from a dyno pull. Of course I also have extensive exhaust mods which may effect potential air flow here. But the numbers at least show what can be expected after he does the exhaust which will bring nice gains of themselves.
OK, to be conservative lets say he can expect to see 35-40chp gain (the weight reduction is equivalent to the 5hp) from those mods with good tuning. That means spending some at the strip and/or dyno and tuning base timing and fuel pressure. I've had my Vette on the dyno twice, made countless tuning passes down the 1/4mi and used scan tool results to try and get the most from my mods; and it has paid off well.
When you consider that doing heads, cam and headers should add another 70chp or so to bring the power up to around 370chp (see the L98 mods results table on my site), you realize that there is great potential in our underrated L98 and it responds well to correct mods.
For another real success story take a look at the results of mods Vic'89 has done to his L98. He too has realized excellent results from some rather inexpensive mods, as well as from exhaust mods similar to mine...that is until he recently added LT headers to his mods list. Though I'm still running very low 13s in excellent weather he is running well into the 12s.

Re: List your free mods! (65Z01)
yea I'd have money if it wasnt for my interior. I just spent 450 on weatherstripping and now my a/c is out and I need a new compressor and a/c line then carpet, seats, and dash pieces. so i should hopefully be done with that crap and start on engine parts in around 4 months :hurray:

Free or cheap,
Cut lid
Spare tire/jack delete
Bose stereo speakers/boxes deleted
K&N added
TB adaptor installed
180 degree stat installed
Changed to rapid fire plugs
some of these cost a little, but not much.
You can also cut the screens from MAF, but I won't do that
Or relocate MAT sensor, which I have not done either

Is it safe to say that for every 8 lbs of weight eliminated, you can pick up 1 HP? Is this a constant or does the HP gain diminish as you remove more weight? So if I eliminated my 105 lb wife, I would gain 13 HP? :)

Well that's the equation...but you might lose a little more than that if you got rid of her....
The rule of thumb for a car in our weight range is that 80lbs change is equivalent to about 10hp change. There are equations on my site (link in my sig below) that you can use to calculate CHP from trap speed and launch weight. Plug in some various numbers for your vehicle weight and see how the CHP number changes, or hold CHP constant and see how trap speed changes with vehicle weight.
