I have noticed that my vette has a bit of a "ping" when I get on it. I am wondering if this is generally due to timing being off? I just hate to hear that sound and want to fix it. Ok, as some of you may have gathered from my posts, I want EVERYTHING on my vette to be perfect, but I would like to get rid of this ping. Suggestions? Running 91 octane fuel. Have had injectors cleaned.

Re: Engine "pinging" - Could it be the timing is off? (AGENT 86)
:iagree: The plastic cover on my knock sensor is broken and I have found that it does tend to get loose and i seem to have the sound of a slight ping when that happens
Otherwise, it could be that 1) base timing is a little off
2) ECM may not be receiving correct signals (now I am over my head)

Here's what I learned, and I'll probably get some of the terms wrong :D
When you start the car up, until it gets up to temperature the computer system isn't a closed loop. So it's limited in how much it will adjust timing etc... Depending on how cold it is when you start, may take a while before you can "get on it"
If it's doing it when the car is hot, I'd make sure your using premium fuel. When I go on cross country drives I don't always bother with premium. Mine runs fine on the mid grade ( as long as I'm not hard assing it)

When was the last time you changed your fuel filter? You might be running lean due to the flow not being adequate. As far as code 43 issues, I kind of doubt it. Code 43 is set if all following conditions are met: Coolant temp 194 degrees or higher and it's your 1st WOT application. In a nutshell, the ecm is testing the knock senr by advancing the timing till it picks up knock and then goes back to normal. If the ECM doesn't see knock, it severly retards the timing to protect the motor.
Other possibilities : Faulty fuel pressure regulator, spark plugs with too high heat range or possibly the injectors were damaged when they were cleaned. Who cleaned them and how?

another possibility is your EGR.. if that's not all working properly you can experience pinging.. also if that little solenoid near the charcoal canister isnt functioning right
