is it possible to turn back to odometer on a C4? i heard there were some features built into these to prevent that
the reason i am asking is because i looked at a vette today with relatively low mileage and i was just wondering what are the odds of that being legit?
you can allways run carfax or find out where it was serviced and pull a service record if it was ever serviced at dealer they keep track of mileage.Usally if milage was rolled back the numbers dont line up right.how many miles does it have on it.
PS: is carfax actually any good?
the reason i am questioning the mileage is because the car has had quite a few owners in the past... but most of them were dealerships
Be aware too; that the opposite can apply; Too LITTLE miles reading on odo;
If there's a fault in speedo side of dash, (as in my case DAMNIT!!)
the odo will not keep clocking up the miles! So you COULD find yourself buying a car that has a LOT more miles on it than it reads - This MAY be the case in the car you're looking at perhaps??
Yes even an electronic ODO can be turned back. Just remember man made man can fix it. But hopefully you got a good car and everying is OK. Even carfax won't tell you much. Thats because the car had to be repaired at the dealer or some other agency that would have been in the carfax system. If the guy did all or most of his own work as I do there are no records. I have a 95 with less than 10k miles on it, would you beleive it? In reality it does for real.
In the case of the digital ODO it would be a little more difficult cause they would have to reprogram new miles on it and all that electronic crap would be too difficult for these kind of guys. On the other hand, the mechanical ODO is as easy as opening the dash. Less than an hour. I did it once to a car that we transform into racecar and wanted to know real race miles.

I'm not sure what year started to use the CCM, but my '92 has a CCM that maintains the odometer reading.
The CCM can be swapped out with a CCM from a vehicle with lower mileage. But, the CCM also has the VIN # of the vehicle programmed into it, and you can read the VIN # of the CCM with a Vetronix scan-tool to see if someone changed it.
The only way I know of altering the odometer reading in the CCM so it is undetectable is to get a new or refurbished CCM from GM/Delco and program it before the vehicle has accumulated 100 miles on it -- after a new CCM accumulates 100 mile, you are locked out from programming it. This way you can set the odometer reading and the VIN # to anything you want. But, there is one catch here: Vetronix will not supply anyone but a GM dealer with the software for the Vetronix scan-tool that will do this. So, a shady dealer could easily alter the mileage.
The previous replies answer your question, but car fax helps, and someone is doing free checks on the C5 FOR SALE section. Best thing to do is check over the car and ensure it runs well and is in good shape. If your happy, then thats all that matters.
:cheers:
The mechanical ones will have a gray line that appears between the digits if tampered with. This is the line that separates the digits. They are normally black until monkeyed with then they rotate to gray. I read this years ago so NO I don't have personal expericence with it. :seeya
The electrical odo ones can have the PCM replaced.... the older ones have to be wound forward, or can be replaced as well.
It's not the PCM/ECM, but as Tom stated, it is the CCM located up in the dash. Swap out the CCM, but the VIN will give it away.
But, I do know that while in LIMP Mode, a car will not accumulate any mileage. Performance is severly lacking, (no ign advance), but they are drivable.
