I was going thru my weekly preventative maintenance routine today and lifted the hood and found my filter lid hanging half off. The tab on the side of the filter housing snapped off. Last weekend I cleaned the K&N and it seemed fine.
Has this happened to anyone else. Is there a quick fix?
I'm trying JB Weld right now. If that doesn't work, I think I'm going to duct tape the friggin thing on there.
I checked Mid America for a new filter housing: $64.99. Does that sound reasonable or is there some place cheaper?
Order a used one from vette2vette.com It's $65 for a new one no matter where you go. The plastic gets old and brittle. Doubt you'll be able to make it work , but good luck.
Had the same problem. I tapped a hole into a piece of aluminum and riveted it to the plastic, Ain't pretty but it works. Someday i'll replace the base. :smash:
Ecklers is about $59,
Corvette Central $54,
How do I know....
just bought one for my '88, broke during the caravan... made temporary repairs with the handy dandy electricians tape...
ordered from Corvetter Central on Sunday night... was at my door Tuesday when I got home from work.
I was thinking of the JB weld bond.. will do it to the old one (as a spare)
I tapped a hole into a piece of aluminum and riveted it to the plastic...
Same here, with sheet steel. Used a reinforcing piece on the inside, long rivets through both outside & inside plates. I should have put polyester resin in the mix as well...
...There's always next time... :D
I tried 2 applications of JB Weld and both times it came apart when I tightened down the filter lid.
I ended up using my dremel to cut a piece of sheet metal and attached it to the filter housing. However, the filter does not appear to completely seal now; so, this is going to have to be temporary.
My new question is: should I get a new housing from vette2vette delivered for $65 or a used one from a local yard (High Performance Salvage) for $50. I can pick up the used one at my liesure; however it is a bit out of the way.
I e-mailed the guy from High Performance Salvage to try and get him to come down on the price, because I'm local and own two (C4 & F-Body) of the cars he specializes in (future business).
