Default 85/86 Jet Performance Question

Will a Jet Chip from a 85' work on my 86'(cast heads)? They both have the same tranny 4+3.... Jet part #18517?

A chip will give you no HP gains, contrary to what they advertise.

However, the chip itself should work.

I don't think that the 86 chip will work in the 85 car. The ECM hardware changed during the two model years. They went from a 1226870 to a 1227165 ECM.

I too doubt that the chip will give you any gains even if it will run the car. I checked the differences between a stock 1990 chip and one of their so called Stage 2 chips and the only thing I found different was that they added 2 to 3 degrees of timing in the timing maps. And this was suposed to be a custom chip that my friend paid $300 for! When he found out what I knew he was on the phone chewing some JET A**!

While they did change ECMs, the program is similar, I believe Marcho Polo used an 85 chip for my 86.

I do doubt that an 86 chip will work for an 85 though, be he's doing it the other way around.

Well...

I have an ADS chip in my '87 originally made for an '89 I bought new off EBay for $75.00. It works great! I think there's a lot more chips that can be switched in the different years than these chip burners would lead you to believe.

However, when I had my new cam installed with the motor rebuild, CompCam recommended an after-market chip for better driveability and idle.

FWIW,
BIG JIM
