Default Planning engine build-up...

Title says it all. I'm beginging to plan my new engine build-up. I'm wanting to have somewhere between 350-400hp. I have a couple of questions as this will be my first build-up. Is it really nessisary to have forged internals (ie pistons and rods) if you're not going to run nitrous? What kind of bottom end parts does everyone recommend? Also what heads do you guys recommend in order to achieve that hp goal? Any ideas? :smash:

In that horsepower range you can go with cast internals and high silicone content pistons like those made by Keith Black/Silvolite. Using those peices would save a lot of cash to be used elsewhere. Eagle and Scat has decent cast cranks that you can build a 383 with to easily meet or exceed your goals.

I used casted parts in my 383 with no problem. After my second rebuild I used forged pistons because i got them cheap. Save your money for some nice heads and full steel rolling rockers from Crower.

What do we have to work with? Is it from scratch or using your current block? Umm...it's probably in OK shape, have it completely checked out, magged and what not. Possibly you could re-use crank and rods after conditioning them. I had a bad experience with hyperuetectic pistons, so I can't recommend them

Change out the iron heads and get some aluminum. Maybe hogged out D113's with 2.02's/1.60's or aftermarket ones. Bigger cam with moderate duration, maybe in the 230's but no less than 112 LSA. What kind of intake do we have to play with? I had my stocker bored .030 over to 355 + superram, stock D113's, 220/224 cam, tuning, dyno at 280 RWHP. Ran low 13's. It felt great!
You should be fine with cast recip assy. We of course think you should go to 383 :D
More ideas from cool forum members will follow....
