in searching the archieves, some people has "flushed" the power steering by changing the reservior fluid only, and others have seriously flushed it by removing the return hose and really flushing it clean.
the service manual only mentions a partial fluid change by sucking the reservior clean with a suction gun, then refilling it. however I am changing to redline synthetic, so I think I may do a real complete flush.
1. Buy Turkey Baster
2. suck out all fluid in reservoir
3. refill with a new fluid, synthetic preferably
4. drive car around
5. repeat until fluid is the color of the new fluid
I pulled my fuel pump fuse and ran it till it died.
I then removed the return line at the tank and put a small plastic container on the end of it.
Turned the engine over till it emptied tank.
Emptied container, refilled tank with new.
Repeated this a few times till i was sure i it was all new oil.

Been there done that.
If you pull the hose suggest that you have somebody in the drivers seat, somebody with the bottle and somebody holding the hose: as things happen rather quickly. If the pump drains the damage is permenant.
A better approach (at least for me [feeble]) is to use a turkey baster to evacuate the PS pump and refill with clean fluid. You do have to do this several times, after using the steering for quite a few miles to move the fluid around. Not perfect, but perfectly safe!
|Also suggest that you use GM "Cold climate" power steering fluid. I have 4 quarts of Redline I will give you if you want it.
I have done what Vador recommended. Easy to do. Suck out the old stuff, put in new, drive it, suck out, put in new, drive it. You may go thru a couple of $4 bottles of power steering fluid, but the job is easy, at least. :)
I am also going to change to Redline fluid. I am also glad that I read this topic. I will also just suck out the old fuild as it seems safer, cleaner, and easier.
Pete,
I will GLADLY take your redline fluid... as I didn't buy enough.
I will send you a prepaid UPS address tag. just dump the box at a UPS depot or any UPS man, or even a mailboxes etc.

Re: power steering flush (larryfs)
Done!
But, first, call Redline and ask them about use in your car. That is what I did after I bought it. Doh.
And I you check some really old posts you will see that I warned about the Valvoline PS fluid in GM. Not leaks, but failures: this was found in a south Jersay dealership quite a while ago.
I searched the archeives for vavoline PS fluid and all combinations. couldn't find any info or failure threads......
just let me know where to send the address tags
thx!!
