I have the heads of my 85, I just finished a 3 angle valve job and ported the heads slightly (mostly blending). Now that I am in the engine the cylinders look great at 119,000 miles and not a sign of a ring groove, I figure it needs a timing chain..... and I would like to replace the cam. in favor of a little more performance.
I know the TPI runners are the limiting factor on higher rpm horsepower, but i would like to prepare for the future and push the runners to there limit until i can upgrade them. I plan on opening the plenum and base a little while I have them off.
Any suggestion on a cam? it's an automatic, but it acts like it has a stall convertor already in it.
I am pretty sure the '85s had a 2000rpm stall installed, after that it was a lower stall speed. I would be interested in a new cam for my 85 as well.
So TTT
Your '85 actually does have a high stall tc in it. 2056rpm stall to be precise, which with mods will flsh up to 2500-2600 I've heard. (Mine hits 2500).
I am not sure about a cam, but maybe a Lingenfelter 212 cam would work.
Specs : 214/224 .472/.496 with 1.6 rockers, 112 CL
It is a Hydraulic Flat Tappet cam, so direct fit into our '85's and don't have to upgrade with a roller retro-fit kit (expensive).
I'm switching to the 213 cam, which has slightly more lift, but I have more intake mods. Also I hope you didn't do too much porting on the chambers on your heads. They are large enough as it is, making the larger will reduce your compression from the already tiny 9.5:1.
