There are 2 schematics shown on site.
Which one do you use ?
Do you have to be able to switch resistors at R3 to switch from ALDL mode and factory test mode ?
What is factory test mode ?
Why does one schematic show 12 volts tied in ?
I built the one with the 12v power lead for my '747 ecm in the minivan with the Caddy V8 (long story, don't ask). Since the van is at the shop and the Vette is here, I tried the cable and winaldl on the '165 and could not get anything to happen. I don't know if the cable is not compatable with the '165 or if I built it wrong, so if anyone has more info PLEASE share it!
I built the 12v external source and mine works great. The difference of the 12v source is that your computer may or probably has a power source in its DB-9 connector, but I used a DB-9 to USB adapter and wasnt sure if it would get power that way. To be sure it works its easier to just build the external. The R3 does not need to be switched. You want the computer in diagnostic mode when hooked up, when its not in diagnostic you get no data.
I built the "Two Resistor" model and works great with WinALDL, Craig Moate's software and with Datamaster. I used 12 volts from the cig. lighter because I'm also working on a Palm program and I don't want to drain more power from the handheld batteries. Hope that answers your question.
Oh, and the only modes I use are shorted for code blinking and 10K resistor for computer tie-in.

The same cable you built for winALDL works for moates also.?
I peaked at moates schematics and it looked like was alot more to it.
Any info would be great.
Thanks
Sorry, I should have explained further. The WinALDL site shows a simple one-way interface. Hence its only useful at 160 baud because that interface will not allow you to interupt the datastream and put the computer in 8192 mode.
The "two transistor" style interface will allow Moate's software and Datamaster to send the "Mode 1" signal to the ECM and start the 8192 stream. But, that same interface is just as happy being a receiver-only for WinALDL. At least thats how it worked for me. And, I'm assuming you have a 165 ECM. Guess I should have asked.

ALDL OBDI scaning interface covers:
1986-92 MAF and MAP systems with the 1227165 & 1227730 ECMs
and now '93-95 LT1( 4th gen Camaro & Firebird with OBDI system).
For other available supported cars platform simply look f.e on : http://www.ttspowersystems.com/DM_Software.htm.
It supports 160(tbi) & 8192(tpi) baud ( bits per second ) data streaming.
NEW!!! - run this interface with DataMaster free diagnostic software
to calculate performance your car on "1/4 Mile calculator" in drag race !!!
On LT1 engine get too transmission data, VIN and clear DTC code !!!
I just purchased a AKM completely assmembld cable. Trying to get datamaster to work. So far nogo. When Itest com port via datamaster it see's the cable but no ECM. Do I need to add the 10K resistor ?
Trying to run 8d datamaster with 7730 conversion ecm in 85 vette.
Diacom links up fine.
I'm not sure about Datamaster but my Moates cable and my WimALDL cable both needed 10 k resistor across A and B to put the ecm into diagnostic mode. It can't hurt to try.
Good Luck
