Default Injector cleaning

Is is practical/possible to clean injectors from an 86 L98? I have one leaking and I was curious to see if it could be cleaned and/or repaired once they are removed. Is it something that requires special tools or knowhow. I know it's easier to buy new ones but I like to fix things as much as possible. Thanks

You can have them cleaned but it likely that wont keep them from leaking. I belive it was Lingenfelter who offered fuel injection service but dont know if they do now or exactly what it entailed.

Are you talking about an internal or external leak?

I sent my injectors to Rich at cruzin performance. He will clean , flow test and replace the screens (all 8) for under $100. He will take the time to answer any questions if you give him a call. A lot of forum members have used him without complaint. You can contact him at rich@cruzinperformance.com. and no, I don't get a kick back. :D

Mine were leaking, had poor spray patterns and worse of all, they had a rust-like sediment contaminating several of them. Rich put them through his cleaning process 3 or 4 times (with no added charge to me), and made several calls to let me know what was going on. He also talked me through a bunch of suggestions regarding flushing the rest of my fuel system in order to eliminate the source of the contamination. He eventually restored mine back to new operating condition.

I can't say enough good things about the way he runs his business.

If you don't have one leaking and want to restore them to factory condition, how long will they last? Is it better to buy new ones or for the money is it better to have them cleaned and refurbished. I'm just wondering b/c it sounds like mine are "clicking." Does that mean anything to anyone? What can be done to fix that. I'm sure that it is hurting the performance, but I don't know. I sometimes have a hesitation when I get on it, but other than that it's running ok. When the fuel gets low (range meter show 10 or less miles to empty) it has a lot of hesitation and some "sputtering."

Fuel injectors are pretty rugged for an electromechanical device.
They can (rarely) develop a short in the coil either to the case or to an adjacent winding.
They can leak externally (not so rare)
The spring or pintle can break or get damaged (rare)
Particles in the fuel line can plug injector (not often as this is usually caught in the filter, either in-line or injector inlet filter.
Most of the time, the injector pintle tips get deposits baked on after shutdown. How much depends of the quality of the fuel used and driving habits.

Ultrasonic cleaning will in most cases clean the injector to almost as good as
new and in most all cases stop a leaker if build-up was the cause.
Flow testing will find any weak or broken springs and compare the flow rates between the individual injectors of a set.
Electrical coil tests will look for any shorted windings.

All in all, cleaning and testing used injectors are a sensible alternative to buying a new set. Factory GM Multecs are very expensive and the SVO's will work, but are not identical.
I depends on your budget and future plans for the engine.

GM Multec's are a noisy injector, due to the internal design and the case. Not a real issue.

I just let my Mechanic pressure clean my injectors, that was almost 2 years ago, and still running fine.

I am lookoing for a way to test my injectors myself. I can handle a set up to trigger the coil, but am wondering about how to deliver fuel and/or injector cleaner. I need a pressurized source. Any ideas for a back yard approach?

I cleaned my injectors on my 88 yesterday. I used a pressure can that you fill with liquid and then added air pressure to spray the liquid. I placed the injector in the vice captive by a split rubber hose for protection of the vice. I then put b-12 in the can and pressured up to 45 pbs.(simulated operating pressure). I then ran a hose from the can to the injector and used a matco 12 volt injector pulser to operate the injector. I was surprised how well it worked. I found the single pulse mode on the pulser worked best, it only pulsed once but for a long time and lots of volume. I was happy with the spray pattern...Probably cost you about $100.00
