I know it has something to do with the EGR system becuase it's on the EGR pipe. The wire broke off of the top of it and now the EGR is stuck open all of the time. I tried soldering it, but it just got to hot for the solder and broke again. It looks like a temperature sensor of some kind but I can't find any descriptions of it in my manual. Any suggestions. 86 stock.

It is the egr temp switch. It has no effect on the opening or closing of your egr. It tells the ecm when the egr is opened or closed. You need a replacement.

I will have no other effect, it is only a sensor to tell the ecm of the status of the egr valve. It controls nothing. The egr will act as commanded by the ecm. However, the ecm will think the egr has failed. I do not believe that this will put the ecm into limp home mode.
