Default Oil Pressure woes

Hey all, after dropping my oil pan to fix a couple of leaks, oil pressure is
not consistent when taking off quickly from a stop or when taking a hard
right turn. The Forum had advised I add more oil since I had not compensated
for the dripping oil coming off the motor when pan is off... I have added
more oil and problem persists. The car did not do this before and I am
reluctant to drive until its resolved for fear of grenading the motor.
Is it possible the oil pump needs to be re-primed somehow? I have heard
that some old slant six motors would do this if you were just chacging
your oil... Ideas would be greatly appreciated..

PS this motor doesnt smoke, make noise or use oil in between changes....141K on it..

Thanks!

Maybe somehow the pickup was damaged when you had the pan off.

Sounds like you may have inadvertently bumped the oil pick-up when you reinstalled the pan. There is a specific measurement from the mounting flange to the pick-up.

Steel blue,

Oil pick up was not bumped.. I was very careful under there..
Where could I find specs to adjust this if it was out of whack?
Looks like I'll be yankin the pan again....yay...

Usually you just put a piece of putty on the bottom of the pickup, and fit the oil pan on, then you can measure exactly how far up the pickup is from the bottom, although i dont remember how far up it has to be off the top of my head.

When you accessed the pan did you jack up the motor at all?

If so, you may have damaged the pressure sending unit or connector, which might cause irratic oil pressure during driving.

Check that before you drop your pan again...also maybe hook up a mechanical gauge just to be sure your electrical one is working properly.

PS: depending on the year, your pressure sender is on top near on the back of the motor near the driver's cylinder head, or right above the oil filter housing on the side.
