I have been fighting a ticking noise for way to long. I finally tracked it
down to #1 exhaust with the hose in the ear trick and the car running with
a modified valve cover with a big hole so you can adjust the rocker arms
with it running.
I read in the archives about oil filters that someone had some lifter noise
and it went away with a K&N oil filter. I figured for 10 bucks I would give
it a try. I think it worked. I changed the filter, readjusted #1 exhaust an no
ticking.:hurray: I didn’t think I lived clean enough for the fix to be so simple.
I didn’t have time to put the regular valve cover back on to go for a test ride. I will keep you posted.
The old filter was a Purolator Pure One. Oil pressure was about 40-50 hot idle 60 cruising before. I did not look after. I was to excited that the ticking was gone.
Is the #1 exhaust lifter one of the last to get oil?
Don't make no sense to me, but HEY, whatever works. Personally, I think rotating the tires would have worked just as well. It is interesting, how that filter picked and isolated that one valve, in that one cylinder. Especially right after a cam change. Hmmm. Either way, you can't argue with success. If you're happy, I'm happy. Good luck, and...
I took the valve spring off both the intake and exhaust. The valve stems are is clean and shinny and they moves up and down very smoothly. The exhaust side play is less than .005 measured at the top of the valve stem. The spec is .0047 measured just above the valve guide so it’s ok.
I measured can lift at the pushrod and multiplied by 1.5. It’s what the cam should be. So I have to believe it’s the lifter. My season is almost over so I put it back together. It's been runnig like this for a while one more month shouldnt be a problem. Looks like I found my winter project. Who knows maybe I will find the time to get some real heads.
