In an '85 Vette that I have the computer is now throwing a "CalPak" error. It'll only show up on the scanner when the car is running. When it's running, it runs like CRAP! I un-did the battery and reconnected-- same thing. Then, I pulled out the computer, futzed around with the connectors, pulled out the chips (battery disconnected) and reconnected. Still the same code! Does this mean that the little chip inside the computer is fubar or is it the ECM itself? HELLLLP!
Per Tech Bulliten: GM: CALPAC is the small resistor-pack chip that is used for 'backup" or "limp" modes. The calpac is used by the ECM when it detects a sensor signal loss or sensor signal error. Under these conditions, the ECM used the fixed valued created by the CALPAC internal resistor as the default value for the specific sensor siggnal lost. This "substituted" signal allows the vehicle to operate in "backup" or "limp mode"
Note: the engine speed (RPM) sensor signal cannot be substitued, defaulted, or reproduced by the CALPAC. If the engine speed sensor signal is lost or inoperative..
Thanks! Yeah, it does throw a code, but only while the car is running.. I forget off the top of my head but I seem to remember it being a code 52? Anyhow, the scanner says directly that it is a CalPak error. And the car only runs from mid to full throttle. Part throttle to mid throttle does nothing at all but un-choke the motor.
