Re: Single Plane EFI manifold conversion for C4 Vettes- Prototype Finished! (jburnett)
Jeb and Jesse,
One thought that may help with the throttle body to water neck clearance issues: There is no reason that the IAC has to be installed under the throttle body. Get that out of there for more clearance to the water neck.
The IAC can be remotely mounted and feed directly into the plenum. The IAC just has an air inlet and outlet passage. You can just trim the water passage part of the IAC housing off, bolt a 1/4" plate to the housing, drill and tap for two hose fittings. Then just run the hose from the inlet side to the air filter housing (or a small seperate filter, a breather filter would do). Then run the outlet side hose directly to the plenum.
You could install a thin flat block off plate under the throttle body (or just plug the holes by some other means).

Mr6sp...
Tha is a very good idea and yes i would work.
We are trying to come up with a design that will allow the end user to just simply bolt the unit on. While also limiting the required work Jeb will need to to.
Even with the IAC removed there would still be a need to rework the Tstat housing/water neck, so we figured it would be easiest to kill two birds with one stone. Not to mention the front, where the 3/4 NPT and 5/8 NPT heater nipple and coolant sensor need to be, is very thin, so rework of that area would need to be done anyways.
Re: Single Plane EFI manifold conversion for C4 Vettes- Prototype Finished! (ski_dwn_it)
I've just finished the manifold for the second time...Hopefully all issues are resolved. The main issues; the plenum length and the t-stat location are DONE. Instead of installing a t-stat flange on the front of the casting (ala small Ford) I went ahead with my original plan and milled down the entire casting. I cut the original flange off and then milled it down about 2" (there's A LOT of room there) and TIG welded the flange back on; if it weren't for the TIG welds you could never tell it didn't come that way from the factory!! The quandry now is where to put the CTS and the heater hose bung but I think that's solved too...I'm going to put the CTS down on the front like it is in the factory manifold and then use a 90* barbed fitting mounted topside for the heater hose...That should put them in line and will definitely give enough clearance.
The plenum was relatively simple to modify...I cut off the flange and about an inch of the box. I then built a new tapered extension and angled it down to follow the line of the hood. Simple...
I'm getting ready to email Jesse some new pics so I'm sure he'll post them when he gets them. Please be aware that this IS a prototype and production units will not only look a little different but will also be A LOT NICER!! This sum-bitch is FUGLY with all of the cutting/milling/welding that I've had to do to modify it along the way!

Re: Single Plane EFI manifold conversion for C4 Vettes- Prototype Finished!
Looks great guys. Very impressive.
Theoretical question here.
I have some experience with the manifold in carbuereted applications and really didn't like it for street use. Does the fuel injection solve the lack of a clean low-end?
Just curious why you chose this manifold as a base instead of, say, the Torker.
Re: Single Plane EFI manifold conversion for C4 Vettes- Prototype Finished! (Z-PDX)
The dry flow characteristics of EFI changes things somewhat...Additionally carbed single planes DID indeed used to be lazy on the street but that has been rectified for a large part by the new head and cam technology we're graced with now. You will still lose some bottom end with this manifold like is to be expected on a shorter runner system; however the losses are far overshadowed by the increases in mid-range and top-end power.
Why did I choose the Victor series over the Torker?? Flow for the most part...They flow more than a Torker and are closer to equal length runners. Plus, and to be honest, I never really thought about doing a Torker... If you wanna do one out of a Torker I'll certainly do it for you; for that matter if ANYONE wants one of these out of a different manifold I'd be willing to work with you.

Re: Single Plane EFI manifold conversion for C4 Vettes- Prototype Finished! (jburnett)
Here are the new pictures: Thanks Jeb...let me know the tracking number if you have it, so I can watch for it. I have tomorrow off work, so I can probably get it installed etc, in plenty of time to get it tuned.

Jeb -
Thanks for the thoughtful reply. Interesting thoughts on wet vs. dry.
re: EFI on a Torker. You're on! Sounds like you have your hands full with this project, but when you're ready for a new challenge. Say the word! I'll send you one (and a wheelbarrow of twenties).:D
Re: Single Plane EFI manifold conversion for C4 Vettes- Prototype Finished! (Z-PDX)
G**DAMMIT!!!!! I've run into a problem... The little spacer plate I welded onto the box to move the FPR out of the way is too low and the FPR hits the rail still!!! Oh well, that's the ONLY issue I see and it's pretty minor; Jesse you'll have to zip tie it up! :D
It's also too late for it to go out today but it will leave tomorrow morning on Next Day Air. And I think before I bust off another $80 in UPS freight I'm going to pull the SR off my wife's car tonight and make DAMN sure it fits! If it doesn't that will give me "JUST" enough time to rectify it before it needs to go out tomorrow.

Re: Single Plane EFI manifold conversion for C4 Vettes- Prototype Finished! (jburnett)
IT FITS!!!! I had my wife pull her SR off of her '85 yesterday afternoon so I could try the single plane conversion on it BEFORE I sent it back out to Jesse... Fit like it was MADE for it (oh, wait it was!). So, barring any other issues Jesse will have it tomorrow and should have it ready by the weekend. I hope he doesn't run into anything else because I'm leaving for New Mexico to tune a '80 Vette I built for a guy and won't be back til Sunday!

Yeah, she's pretty handy and I certainly wasn't going to do it. I've been using SR's for YEARS and can R&R one pretty quickly; but she can do it just as fast if not faster...Smaller hands help.

Re: Single Plane EFI manifold conversion for C4 Vettes- Prototype Finished! (mistaben)
Good news! Intake showed up today...weird thing is my shipping people called me in my office and said they had something for me. Turned out the UPS guy delievered it here at the factory :skep:
Opened it up here in the office, held my TB up to it and it looks awesome! *should* be able to fire it up after about 2 hours of work, if that tonight. Get it tuned fairly decent in about another 1.5 hours, then try a few WOT blast on her to dial in the WOT fuel.
I have GOOD feelings about the performance gains with it.
