I was driving arround town when a plastic grocery bag flew across the road in front of me. Did not worry and just drove right over it thinking it would just fly off after driving over it. Well, soon after, still driving I began to smell burning plastic real bad . I thought it was outside. I got home and still smelled it. Popped the hood and looked under the car. One of my long tube headers was covered with what looked like tar from the bottom. That plastic bag earlier on the road got stuck to the hot header and melted on it. :mad
I let the car idle to melt it more and wiped some of it off with a rag. Not all of it came off. How can i get this s---t off my header without removing the ceramic coating? :cuss thanks
Can't you just wipe off what you can then run the car for a bit to let the rest just burn off?
I have driven the car for a day now. I did wipe quite a bit off. The rest will not come off no matter how hot the car gets. It does not seem to just melt off.
Its really not a problem except the burning smell in the car when it warms up.
Something I can safely scrape it off with maybe. Thanks for the reply Lord Odin.
When it's cold, pick it off in big pieces. No big deal.
I would think someone who knew the benefit of long-tube headers and how to install them properly wouldn't be so stumped from a simple malady. But you do say "ceramic coated" which would be an indication of more money than sense.
I had a same thing happen on my cycle. My leg of my rain suit touched the pipes and melted leaving some black tar looking streaks. I was able to remove it with WD-40 and a scrub pad. Warm the pipes up a bit, spray the pad and it should come off. Good luck.

I HOPE you are this guys buddy.
SURELY you wouldn't be so crass as to make a statement like that to someone you don't know.

I had a crappy Civic that the same thing happened while the previous owner had the car. When I bought the car, it had been on there for months and the plastic had turned into a very hard coating on the exhaust. I tried scraping and chipping it off, but it was very solid and I never did get that crap off the exhaust.

Stumped? Any idiot can figure out how to pick at the s---t. Stumped? I would think that a member with the ammount of posts you have you would know all about people posting for better suggestions from those who have done it in the past. I guess then when someone posts for suggestions on removing a "heater core" from others experience on the matter is also stumped, hu? Or maybe you also think that anyone for that matter who asks for easier, better, time saving ways to do something from others is also stumped? They are just f----g dumb a-- people hu? I guess anyone on this f---g forum who wants to find better, easier, faster ways of doing something is just all f----d up and stumped.

Learining better, easier, methods for doing something from those who have done it before seems like common sense to me. Even something as simple as what I posted here. Sure, I can just scrape or pick the s---t off if I wanted to.
Your dumb a-- comments are of no use and no help so just do not bother posting them.
Toluene is an excellent polar solvent. Get it at the hardware store. I have not tried to clean up the charred remains of a grocery bag, but it sure makes short work out of cleaning up the rubber and tar I get behind the rear wheels!
It is pretty gentle on paint - but be a little cautious around painted surfaces.
Well, being ex-military and knowing what we did to clean off aluminum skinned aircraft you could take some thick lexan (plexiglass) and add a bit of an edge to it with a bench grinder and fashion yourself a "plastic chisel" and scrape it off with that. As far as the residue stuff, if stained, I would know. You could contact Jet Hot or others and ask the source for assistance.
We'll ALL ignore the BIG JIM 54 remarks. It must be that time of the month for him.
Looks like you,me and a lot of other folks were a little shocked at the uncalled for stupid remarks he made.
His post remind me of that old saying about "It's better to keep your mouth shut and let folks THINK you are an idiot rather than open your mouth and PROVE you're an IDIOT."
