Let me guess, you hadn't started the 'Vette in a couple of weeks(or more) and you discovered the flashing "sys" when you started it up.
If the above describes what you experienced, you probably just had a "low voltage" code stored.
If the above doesn't describe what you experienced, then it could have been some other code got stored.
Anyway, my '96 Vette has the original battery in it(8 years old!), and if I don't drive it for a few weeks; I'll get that "low voltage" or something like that code.(I'm driving it much more since I left my previous job so that hasn't happened in awhile.)
There's a procedure to check the codes, but I don't remember it. Hopefully someone else will post how to do it, or take your 'Vette to Autozone to have it checked.
You could also try a search to see what comes up.
Good luck!

edit: Looks like Oldman beat me to the post. Hey it took me a few minutes to type that thing up!:)

Thanks to all. My guess is the low battery. Over the previous weekend, finished up installation of the new stereo system and probably drained it to the point that it set the code but could still start the car.
I do not think the battery is dead yet but will keep an eye on it.. Thanks again.

AHA!! This is the other 5% culprit -- installing an aftermarket stereo! This car does not like it when a new stereo is installed. You have to put some sort of capacitor on one of the now-vacant wires to get the SYS to go away. Evidently, the BOSE system uses a wire for some power that is not needed on any aftermarket radio, and when this circuit is open, it flashes SYS.
Here is the answer taken from a previous post:
The SYS flahsing indicates the CCM has detected a fault in one of the electrical circuits. The one you have sounds like it is caused by the difference in the resistance in the dimmer circuit. Here is the tech bulletin for it: http://www.corvetteforum.net/c4/dave8476/index4.shtml, but this is more of a laymans version of what you'll need to do.
If "SYS" is displayed in the LCD section of the instrument panel cluster after the customer installs a new stereo, he will need to do the following:
1. Buy (2) 1 kilo-ohm 1/2 Watt resistors. [Radio Shack part # 271-023. They sell them as a 2-pack for 29 cents.]
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
3. Remove the receiver.
4. Connect one end of both resistors to ignition power. (Yellow wire in the car.)
5. Connect the other end of one resistor to the purple/white wire in the car.
6. Connect the other end of the second resistor to the grey/black wire in the car.
7. Cover all connections and completely cover the resistors.
8. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
k guys, I see the post, I have no help for you, just more questions...
I get sys as well. I havent check the battery, but i dont think that is the cause because my cluster is sometimes non-responsive to the dimmer switch. Sometimes it works, sometimes, it has a mind of its own.
I am retarded when it comes to electronics, so please, if you have any help for me, lay it om me like the newb I am
