Default L98 programable computer

I have a 90 L98 with a non programmable computer, is it possble to swap it for a Porgrammable version? If so what would you suggest, I am rebuilding and have to burn a new chip and thought if it's possible it would be a good time to make the switch.

Is your computer the stock GM computer? If it is then it is programmable, you just need to get the tools to do it with. See this website:

Did I read it right, there is a programable "prom" called the "prominator" that can be put into a original non programmable (non flash) ECU? If that's the case it may be answer! :)

It is sort of a emulator that contains the prom image that you are working on. It is not a true tune on the fly emulator, as it states you have to pull over and program it with your final image. I am not familiar with it. I do use a Romulator which gives me the benefit of tuning on the fly and then when I am done tuning I burn a prom for the car and then I am done. The Prominator actually contains a small prom programmer that talks to your laptop which means you won't have to purchase an additional prom programmer. But this device requires that your ECM be modified to accept it, therefore its a permanent installation. At least that is what it appears to be.

You can install an adapter board and use a flash programmable prom for your ECM without permanent modifications to the ECM. That way a UV prom eraser is not necessary. I have all the hardware as I do all types of proms but for a single user you can just get one adapter board and the couple of flash programmable EEPROMs to use.

How do you burn the EEPROM?

Also what is the cost for all of this stuff :)

Or you can chunk down some serious dough and get a stand-alone ECU with a piggy-back harness. Accel DFI and FAST with a Fasttrack Performance piggy-back will plug right in conjunction with your OEM ECM and harness and will allow you fully programable parameters for fuel and spark... I've had one of Mac's (www.fasttrackperformance.com) piggybacks on my 1990 for about 8 years with DFI; works great! But you're talking about spending some money, now!
