Default hot 88

I have an '88 coupe that seems to be running hot. I thought that the thermostat was sticking , so I replaced that but it didn't fix the problem. The fans were not working, so I tested them, and got them working again. The temperature still climbed ever higher. I shut it down when it got to 270 degrees. I was wondering if anybody thought that it could be a faulty waterpump. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Theres usually several things that can go wrong and to reach those temps. The number 1 problem with these cars is the radiator gets FILLED with debris. If you take the plastic shroud off the radiator,in between the rad and the a/c condensor,it can fill up with leaves, plastic bags, etc etc etc and cause the car to run hot.
I would check this first before ruling out other causes.
If its really clogged, clean that out and then have a radiator shop clean the rad fins and pressure test the radiator for you.You can clean it at home, but In my experience, the shops can get them much more cleaner than we can at home.

Also check that front air dam, that's what directs the air into your radiator. You got no grille in front for the air to flow through, very important.
HAVE A GREAT DAY!!! :flag

:iagree: Trash in front of the Radiator and damaged spoiler or blockage should be checked first

2) be sure the system is full of coolant. Air can be trapped in the upper hose.

I bleed my 88 by backing off on the hose clamp at the thermo end of the upper hose when the engine is warm. If you have air, you will hear it. Tighten up when you see coolant

3) As engine warms up, leave rad cap off. As it warms, you should see coolant flowing toward the cap end. If not, suspect the pump

270* thats pretty high,,, I had mine peg one time,,,,, I took it in and he=ad the fans tested and found out that my guages were wrong, this guy put it on a computer and showed me the fans were kicking on at 220*,,, but the guage somehow showed 260 to 270 degrees...
Is the car actually bubblin or boilin over?

You might have an airlock in the system since the thermostat change.
When cold open cap and then warm up engine till themostat opens and you see coolant flow in the rad. While watching the level in rad reach over and hold the throttle at the 2000 rpm range. When you see the coolant drop, add more coolant then lightly close rad cap. A few minutes later repeat until your sure the coolant is full and there is no air in the sytem.
