Hi folks, I received in a new IAC value today. We thought it was suppose to have the O-ring included and from all indications perhaps should have been. Since, mine did not can anyone with experience having pulled one of these characters out, is it a rubber like O-ring as depicted in the service manual illustration? If so, is it something that comes out relatively undamaged, and can it be cleaned - re-lubed with engine oil and reused?
Also, the IAC has a thread pattern on it. I know that it is secured with two screws and I have the 3 Nm torque value for them, my questions are:
Does this thing get torqued and if so how much torque?
What kind of tool is used to remove/install it? It doesn't mention anything special in ther service manual. But it sure doesn't appear to be a finger thing.
Any other tips or precautions I should know about when replacing this little guy?
The seal is made by an O-ring that should be reusable. If it's not torn, just clean it and lubricate it (lightly). If it's damaged, your local Chevy dealer should be able to get it for you. You might even be able to find it at Lowe's or Home Depot.
Regarding the screws, if you have a torque wrench that measures in inch-lbs, it wouldn't hurt to torque it to the factory value, but it's not critical in this application. I typically use a torque wrench for just about every fastener on the car, but for the IAC I just tightened until the flange completely compressed the O-ring, then snugged it just a hair beyond that.
Washer shaped flat gasket was on my 86's IAC. Be sure to have less than 1 1/8" distance between end of pintle and motor housing before installing.
I may have to correct what I stated above. I assumed that all LT1s were the same, but I just checked the parts microfiche and they're not. In the figure for the '92-93 throttle body, the IAC gasket looks more like a flat paper/fiber washer as opposed to an O-ring. It didn't give a seperate part # for it, but stated that it was available in throttle body gasket kit. The kit is GM part #17112833 or A/C-delco #part 40-742. If you end up having to go to the dealer, as them for the individual gasket - I've been able to get individual parts from them that I couldn't find listed in my source.
Thanks Steve... I'll check with some other local dealer(s) to see if I can get it tomorrow. I'm not to optomistic with that though. Considering the way things are going so far and it being a Saturday.
So far the local dealer whom I use to exclusively service my vette (jobs that can't be done at home) and Superior don't seem to have it or be able to get a p/n for it. I've been told that the kit (box with IAC) was suppose to have one. Mine did not. What really astounded me was how neither the source I got it from nor the local dealer seemed too concerned about it. Yet both of them know me as a very good customer. Further of that I was very disappointed that both, yes both of them when I asked if they had another in stock and if they could verify whether or not it had a gasket (or O-ring) included both gave me nearly the same excuse. "Our parts department is a mess and I just can't go back there and get it." Politely I said well thanks very much for all your help. I'm not sure what I'll do now. Can't figure thought, both have been so good with their quality of service in the past.
I figured I'd ask you folks to get a straight story on this. This is very disappointing to say the least. Guess I won't be changing the t-stat and iac tomorrow. Hope I didn't waste 57.78. Sorry don't mean to dump in your ears.
Perhaps on Monday I can get access to GM/Chevy to inquire about this and see if they will warranty/replace the new part if it is missing the gasket. They'll probably do the typical go back to the dealer.
On a brighter note, if ya haven't seen Pirates of the Caribbean, I just finished watching it on DVD. Pretty darn good movie.
If you bought the A/C-Delco kit #217-415, it's supposed to include the IAC and the gasket/O-ring. I would go back and politely damand satisfaction. If you like, email me and I'll send you a .pdf of the microfiche pages with the details.
I looked on my invoice and it says Valve K 3.338 (17112193). I'll call Monday and be more assertive for a resolution. I'll reference that part number as what I should have received. I hope I don't fall under their "gotch" as it being an electrical part. "SPECIAL ORDER, FACTORY OR ELECTRICAL PARTS ARE NOT RETURNABLE"
Oh I'm always polite, doesn't pay to get pissed. That ends up always being the kiss of customer service death. If I have to eat oh well its only 50.00.
I decide to reschedule the work for another time. Too cold in the garage anyway, for some reason the blizzard up north send 40 degree weather to central fla.
That is indeed the part number for the kit with the IAC AND gasket. I would hope that they are flexible with their policies, since you didn't get what you paid for.
I wish it were 40 degrees here - it's less than half that in NJ.
Me too! Actually it was about 50 something today (Fla remember). I gave the vette a warm bath and did yard work instead. Guess you all are using a snow blower and dealing with that mess. Yuk, sorry but that's why it nicer in the sub-tropics. Thanks again for your help.
