I believe that I saw a small pic of a caprice LT1 waterpump that had a pulley on it. Did I see that right? The reason I ask, I am installing an LT1 in my 91. The belt routing may be easier if I can indeed find an LT1 water pump with a pulley. Then I have to determine if I can spin it the right direction. Maybe I'll just go with an electric. Any opinions or experiences?
Todd, I am pretty sure what you saw was an idler pulley. LTx water pumps are all gear driven from the cam. The B bodys have a different belting arrangement. If you are going to install a LT1 into a 91, you will need all the correct LTx brackets and acessorries from a Vette and not a F body. The F body exhaust and acessorry brackets are totally different from a Vette.
Yes you saw a pully on a Caprice LT1 WP. The W/P is still gear driven but for routing the belts on the Caprice and the roadmaster the installed a pully on thefront of the W/P. You would probably still have to do some fab work but if you used the balancer and W/P off the caprice it may help you keep your Assys closer to thier original location. I just got the corvette bracket and used the LT1 assy's. I had to have the HP P/S and A/C lines fabed at a local hydrolic shop but it wasn't to bad. I was able to use the P/S pump and Alt. that came with with my motor from a F-body with some slight mods but had to buy the corvette A/C compresor, Belt tensioner and idler pully but it wasn't that expensive.
Hope it all goes well, been there done that so if you need help drop me a line.
84LT1, you are the one that originally told me about this. I just haven't been able to confirm it enough to know if I could use one. I didn't realize that the pulley on the water pump didn't actually drive the pump. If it is just an "idler" then it won't help me. I won't be using the stock style timing set, so I will have nothing to drive the pump. I won't be using an opti spark either. :D
