Which radar detector has the best range and sensitivity? I am looking at the Escort, BEL 985, and the one that gives you the position [left/right/forward/behind] can't remember name. Also, where is the best price for these units?

you want a Valentine V1. It is by far the best unit on the market.
I have had mine for over 5 years now, and it ROCKS.

Re: radar detectors (Jeffvette)
I'm pretty dissappointed by the Passport 8500 I had a Passport 5600 or something for 6 years and the 8500 is marginally better al best. The 5600 wasn't that great of a detector, Wished I would have gotten the V1 more I hear. Hidside being 20/20 I should of spent the extra $$. :nono:
Valentine one is the best bar none. One small reason and that is because it is upgradeble, I have had mine since 1996 and its been upgraded 3 times since then.
There is only one ...... the Valentine V1. I am on my second V1 since 1999 now (upgraded to current model and sold old one on eBay) and have tried the Passport 8500 and ohers in between. Bottom line, once you get used to the indicator arrrows, you won't know how you ever did without them. I would never buy another detector. Car and Driver agrees too. The V1 cosnistently scores as teh top detector in their test.

I just use a Cobra, $80 at Best Buy and around here (Lubbock) I pick up every cop a mile or two ahead of time. In Austin it's a little less effective with hills and all, but usually see hear the radar way before I see the cop. This radar won't of course compare to the other ones listed though, but for the money, my whole family uses one :D
Had I had the money at the time, I'd probably be a V1 owner now. I was impatient, though, and had to have one right away so I plunked down the 299 on the Passport 8500. This thing has paid for itself so many times over, it's not even funny. I do a lot of "'round town" driving, so the "sensitivity" (read: tendency to "false") of the V1 might not be the best option for me. But, I'm still open to discussion on that. What I may end up doing is, down the road, purchasing a V1 and literally doing my own side-by-side comparison on the road. Then, whichever one I like best I will keep, and the other will either go to my wife's car or I'll dump it on Ebay.
In the end, any radar detector is better than none, but when insurance rates are on the line, as always, you want the best "protection" you can get. My 2 cents...
