My brother in law has a '90, manual tranny and about 10K miles on the odo. He is not the original owner. After about an hour of driving, there is a loud "clunking" sound coming from the botttom of the engine. When he depresses the clutch pedal, the sound disappears.
He took it to the Chevy dealer and they replaced the flywheel & clutch assembly. It did not fix the problem. He took it back and they supposedly did the same R&R on it. Same problem. Now he is looking to take it back for the third time for the same problem.
Any ideas, folks? Sorry for the long post but he is REALLY frustrated.
Thanks. The dealer swears it is a clutch/flywheel problem. After the second go-around, they admitted that the original GM flywheels are not good and supposedly ordered one from California (Don't know what the CA connection is  ) Wen he went to pick it up the second time, he was told that they went ahead and just replaced the flywheel with the GM brand. Hummmm. this is a strange one.
Re: STRANGE PROBLEM - Can anyone help??? (98BlackMagic)
I tend to agree with the dealer. It sounds like the original problem was the dual mass flywheel. Maybe they got a bad one, it does happen sometimes. The ZF is inherently noisey so GM installs a two peice flywheel to dampen the noise from the transmission.
