Default Question about PKE (Passive Keyless Entry)

Ok, I've got a 1993 coupe, and it's got passive keyless entry. Everything was working fine with it until last night when I pulled out the OEM radio in the dash to install a replacement OEM radio.

I had the car sitting with the battery unplugged for probably about 5 hours. I put the new radio in, and closed the dash back up, and everything is fine. The radio works, and there are no problems there...but for some reason now the passive keyless entry isn't doing anything. I can walk away from the car for however long I want and it doesn't lock itself. This is very frustrating because it was working PERFECTLY yesterday! I've checked all of the fuses that are on the right side of the dashboard, and all seemed to be good (from what I could see with my eyes anyway). The key fob buttons work fine too, I can press the hatch button and the hatch opens, and the door button unlocks the passenger door, but still no PKE. The SECURITY lamp flashes as it should normally when the door is open, and when I lock the car by hand, and reach in to unlock it, the alarm goes off, as it should. What's going on here? Is there another fuse hidden somewhere for PKE or is it just somehow turned off after the battery was unplugged? Please help!! I've run out of ideas. I've tried to press and hold both the door open button and the hatch button on the remote because one of the previous posts had said that this is how you toggle PKE on or off, but nothing happens. I haven't seen the Passive Keyless Entry light come on on the little information center in the center of the dash either...

Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing this problem? Is it possible that I shorted something in the dash when I put it back together (I was very careful and made sure that everything went back the way it was originally...)

HELP!

-Nate

There are two simple things you can try. Assuming the fob is still programmed to the car correctly, I believe there is a procedure that enables and disables the automatic locking (one door, both doors, or none). If the programming was lost (or even if not), there would be no harm in going through the reprogramming procedure for the fob. Both of these procedures are described in your owner's manual.

<Sigh> Unfortunately for me...I don't have a copy of the owners manual with me right now...it's somewhere...but it's not with my car...if it's not too much trouble, could someone let me know what the procedure is to do this? I'd be so very appreciative of any help at this point, and thank you for responsing so quickly to my post!

Ok, nevermind, I found my manual, so I don't need instructions, but I'm still not able to get the passive keyless entry light to do ANYTHING. I've checked both of the fuses for PKE as listed in the manual, and they are both good. Also, I tried to reprogram the remote so that pressing the button would unlock both doors (you put the key in the ignition and turn to the off position then press and hold the door button on the remote) but nothing happes! I also followed the instructions in the manual for a reprogram of PKE or for toggling PKE on or off, and still nothing?

What is going on here?!? Is the radio in any way connected with the PKE system?

The DOOR button on the key fob, is only to unlock the Passenger door, if you have the PKE programmed for only DRIVER door unlock. The other option is ALL DOORS unlock. In that case, both the Driver and Passenger doors will already be unlocked assuming the system is enabled and working correctly.

If you hold the door button longer than 2 seconds with the key out of the ignition, you can enable or disable the PKE system.

If you have the PKE system enabled and the key in the ignition, you can enable the ALL DOORS UNLOCK/LOCK option by pressing the DOOR button for longer than 2 seconds.

In both cases, the doors will respond by locking and unlocking to indicate the programming has been received.

I hope he got it figured out.

In any event, you are correct about the door button not ever unlocking the drivers door.

Good call.

His last new thread on the car was Jan 2004 and does not look like it was resolved or at least he never stated it. He probably does not have the car anymore and said he does not know much about cars. His few problems might have been too much for him.

In my short analysis the programming was not lost. The PKE bulb itself should have been checked. You could never verify if the PKE was in sleep mode. The door switches on principal should have been checked. Not sure if the driver's door unlock solenoid was working. If it was, problem could have been the PKE itself.

Save your advice for someone who currently needs it.
