Hey all, I'll be pulling off the intake on my 85 L98 soon and will be replacing a noisy lifter.
Should I replace all of them and the pushrods?
What other 'gotchas' are there with this repair?
And how should the new lifters be properly prepped so that lubrication isnt a problem on startup?
Replace all of them. If one has gone bad it won't be long before another one gives out. I don't see any need to replace the pushrods if there are no signs of abnormal wear or damage unless you are going to repalce the rockers as well.
also it's a good idea to soak your new lifter in oil before installing. If you don't replace the push rods they should be installed in the same location they come from.Good luck.
I agree with changing out all the lifters! Make sure you install the old push rods in the original orientation and locations. You can assure this by taking a piece of 2 x 4 about 16 inches long and drilling 16 holes (8 drilled near the left edge of the board and 8 on the right edge) about half way through the thickness of the wood. As you remove the rods, place them in the wood holes in the correct position from the engine. You will need to mark cylinders 1 and 2 on the wood block.
Check each push rod by inspecting the ends of the rod. The end should be of a uniform radius and should be very polished. In addition, roll each rod on a flat surface to check for bent rods.
The above comment on good lubrication BEFORE you fire her up is also good advice. I usually soak the lifter and then pour oil on the rocker arms and push rods prior to start up.
Seeing as how you have an L98 it is very easy to prime the oil system before you install the distributor. NAPA (others I'm sure) sell an adapter that you attach to your electric drill. You then insert the adapter down the distributor access and engage it to the oil pump. Start the drill and it lubricates your entire oil system. It even pumps up the lifters.
