When I change my 96's, I am going to use what is specified in the owners manual. I have always used the GM lubricant in the rear end of my 70 since it was new and it has 160K on it now with no known problems using GM lubricant. I always change my own.
I used the BMW synthetic oil recommended by ZF for the tranny. It shifts smoother than the GM stuff IMHO.
:iagree:
The GM stuff felt a little "notchy" but the BMW stuff makes it smooth as silk.
Let's compare apples to apples. If you have the GM stuff and it's old, when you remove it and refill with Castrol (BMW stuff) of course it's going to feel better. So will the GM stuff when it's new. Both will work just fine.

Actually, I was comparing apples to apples. Sorry I did not explain.
When I first got my 90 it had a little grinding in 3 and 4 so I replaced the fluid with GM stuff. I do not think the previous owner ever changed it in 125K so there was an improvement but it was not much. I was underwhelmed.
After 10k miles I switched to the BMW stuff and it showed an immense improvement. The only downside it that the tranny is a little more stiff in the mornings (Garage is 20*F most of the time).
Stick with the BMW juice. I filled mine with REDLINE MTL "blue martian blood" and it about killed my ZF.It would not go into 3rd or 4th half the time.I switch it out and ran BMW/CASTROL now it's back to normal.IMHO the redline has to many additives. You can't even see though it when you pour.It might be great in some trannys, but I think the ZF has alot tighter tolerances.Learn by my mistakes!!
The ZF S6-40 6-speed transmission is lubricated by engine type oil. Manufacturer recommendations specify the use of GM P/N 1052931 (5w-30) or BMW P/N 07510009420 (10w-60) oil.
Approximate oil capacity of the ZF S6-40 is 2.2 quarts.
So the GM stuff is 5W-30 and the BMW stiff is 10W-60??? That seems like quite a spread to me on viscousity levels for the same trans...
Looks like I'll be going by the BMW dealer though and picking up the "good stuff"... That'll be one of the first projects when I get the LT4 home this week... :yesnod:
