I have a ticking sound coming from my left rear wheel...if it turns out to be a wheel bearing where is the best place/price to buy a new one (or two if I decide to do both) ?...also, does anyone know the approximate labor time involved ?... thanks
Dan
p.s. I've checked with Chris @ Superior and he wants $237.53 per copy..
Check with Advanced Auto, I got mine for $155.00 each.
Expect about an hour a side. I think it's a T55 socket you will need to remove the torx bolts... they are inside the hub. A nice long extention will be needed... and a breaker bar!
Get a 2nd T55, there is a chance you will break/strip a socket.
They were $150 at PepBoys last spring when I did mine. I would say that 1 hour is about right if you've done 'em before. The first one will take longer, but it's not a difficult job.
I just got a new R.W. bering. For over $200 from dealer. Don't need it, dealer I bought the car off of included it( was no brake pad left on rear brakes, his bad). Anyways, I.M. me if you want it, brand new, don't need it. $100 shipped
I just got a price of $115 for the rears from The Last Detail in Atlanta 770-414-0077. The sales rep said the units were not AC Delco but were American Made. He also carries AC Delco for $199. I'm going to order a pair of generic ones tomorrow.
Check your wheels. Try to wiggle them by pushing strongly on the tire. If the give a little wiggle then it probably the bearing. But it sounds to me like it might be a U-joint. Does it make the clicking sound when you take off? U-joint is only about $20... As long as you are replacing one, you might as well replace both of them on the half shaft you are working on.
Do you have play at 6 and 12 oclock ?
If it is a click on initial movement it could be a combination of dry/rusty splines and too little torque on the axle nut.
Applying anti-seize on splines and retorquing may terminate your problem.
I don't know exactly how long it's been ticking/clicking...I happened to be driving slowly alongside a residential wall with my window down and heard it...the noise gets faster and slower with the speed of the car...sometimes it starts when you take off, sometimes not...same when driving...the noise comes and goes...it does happen at some point every time I drive though...
2 things - oops... I mixed front and rear up... :( pepboys for 139.00... Thats where I got mine.
2nd - make sure you slather on some antiseize compound onto the axel stub. it will keep it from making nasty noises. Take a wire brush to the axel and clean up the splines.
the bolts, according to the book, should be torqued to 160 ft-lbs. Apparently, it now should be 200 ft-lbs.
How much play is acceptable? I have two new rear bearings that I have had for two years just waiting for the OE ones to wear out. I just turned 84K.
If you can feel any in your hands rocking at 12 & 6 then it is too much. I want to say 0.006" is the tolerance which obviously is less than your hands could easily feel.
When I checked them Sunday at the shop I could feel them rock a little, but compared to all the C3s I've worked on over the years they felt pretty good. Guess I'll go ahead and do it.
I bought mine from Pepboys and they had the same manufacturers markings as the original units. AC Delco does repackaging just like everybody else. Do yourself a favor and shop for OEM replacements without paying OEM prices.
Do a clean and retorque of the axle spline before you change it out. May not be bad as already mentioned. Don't waste money removing a good part.
i think i need to replace my bearing too...the rear wheels do play a little bit...i'd also like to know how much work is involved in replaceing them...is it simple remove/replace...or are there other parts in the way first? i've read them shop manual procedure and it seems a little involved in terms of dealing with the brakes (something i prefer to not mess with). any pointers would be apprciated
hah i have the same problem. exactly how u decribed the sound is wht i get. after you change your bearings let me know if you get rid of the noise... i dont have alot of money and i cant afford to go change it if they dont need it.
sp please post if your new bearing fix the problems or if it was the u joints.
thanks
