Can someone please tell me how bad this is?? This is just in front of the rear differential on the right side. I had the car inspected carefully, or so I thought, before I bought it. This is my first time under the rear end. Any ideas?
It really looks like it's leaking past the drain plug. I would clean all the oil off really good and then make sure the plug is tightened down properly. Some degreaser spray and a rag should do it. If it is loose, tighten it. If it is tight, remove it and make sure you are getting a proper seal at the plug hole. Clean the back of the plug and arround the plug hole in the differential before intalling it back on. Keep an eye on it for leaks. After cleaning all that oil off you should be able to see where it's coming from. :auto:
Is that the drain plug where I hear people talking about sticking a small hose and pumping out the fluid for service? If so, I was wondering where that was. The only reason I found this was because I've got the car stored up on the ramps and it was easy to just get under there and take a good look around with a bright light. I haven't noticed any fluid drips on the ground under the car, yet.
I am totally comfortable under the car with this setup.
Thanks for the input. I'll pull the plug, get the area cleaned up and see if it continues to leak. I may just drain the differential, replace the fluid and put a new plug in there to be on the safe side. How does that sound?

 You may just want to pull the plug and see if fluid drains out. Overfilling the diff is easy and often the problem!
Not a bad idea to pump out the old and replac with new, but I would also be sure to put the GM aditive in and be careful yourself not to over fill it.
I fill it till fluid starts to run back out of the hole and then I let it drain till it stops running out of the hole. Car should be level while doing this

Thanks again for all your replies.
Here's an update. I'm going to get it all cleaned up first and make sure the plug is gootin tite. Then I'm going to drive it a while and see if I can pin point the leak, if it still leaks. If it is leaking from the seal or gasket, I will take care of that. If no leak, I will still drain it and refill with Mobil 1 75W90 and the GM additive. I got all the fluids I need on the way home and a small syphon pump. I also got some Simple Green to help get it cleaned up good. I'll let you all know what the outcome is from these steps. Thanks again.

Well, I have taken the car out twice and there is no sign of anymore leaking from around the fill plug of anywhere else around the rear diff. I was able to tighten the fill plug a little bit but I'm betting it was just a messy service from the previous fluid change. At least now I can check it after every outing since I am now storing the car on top of my ramps. Thanks again for the help.
Check the rear DIFF fluid level!! Usually it's a sign that the rear pinion seal is leaking! If it is low it wont leak any more! Check the level, refill if necessary and monitor! CHECK THAT REAR PINION SEAL!
I pulled the plug and stuck my pinky in there and the fluid level is just a hair below the bottom of the fill hole. I guess I'll just keep an eye on it and see what happens.
