I am having a new bottom end built. The shop that is doing the balancing says they will get it to .02. I asked about overbalancing and they say they never do it.
Many shops I have talked to in the past have stressed that they do overbalance. Is this an issue or something that hardly means anything?
Balancing is balancing, getting the components i.e. rods, pistons all within .02 seems close enough for me. I really don't understand the concept of over balancing  for instance if you got everything within say .oo you would be perfectly balanced to the 1/100th, were splitting very fine hairs which in my humble opinion wouldn't be worth .02 cents more. :D
I have been told that the reason to overbalance is to compensate for the crank dragging through the oil at higher RPM's.
Luvmy,
I am doing the bottom of the race car engine. I can not do alot on the top end due to rules but the bottom end stuff is VERY light stuff. Cam design is proprietory. Pistons special built to go with rings. Balancer was a 2 hour discussion. Headers are designed, great amount of thought and effort has gone into this build. I am hoping to have the car on the track for some break in by the end of March. I want to cover every base so I do not look back and regret not doing something.
