Scorp, do really believe that Jesse's intent here is to make money?
Did I say that? No, so don't put words in my mouth. I'm just siting an example that happens often.
BTW, where and what are the official guidelines for determining vendor status? I looked in the Advertising section as well as the FAQs but couldn't find anything...
I don't think there are any "official" rules posted.

Hey sorry, I thought I was asking a question. So do you think this project is an example of that same thing?
OK. Before this post looses its original intent of helping people out and giving them an alternative to COSTLY , not even related to corvettes or performance shops let all take a pill. Myself included.
Scorp your opinions are duel noted. thanks.
Now back to the relavant topic information.

Perhaps EASE would consideer a great deal on a GP if enough people were interested and youn could assist members electronicly. If some type of fee was required for your time, a reasonable fee could be charged which could make it worth your while and cover a supporting member contribution as well.
On another forum they have recently asked for a small donation from members which earns them "supporting member" status and gives them some additional privileges. These forums are a tremendous resource for all of us, and I couldn't be a supporter quickly enough. I think a good deal of revenue could be generated here to support the forum for a nominal contribution from members.
yes your idea for a group purchase is along the lines as I said before for EASE to have an opportune chance to get the software out and into the hands of many people for a TRIAL period.
Hell getting started with all this stuff you might as well figure 500+ dollars minimum. The LAST thing someone wants to do when troubleshooting a car is to spend 500+ dollars on something thats only purpose is to point them to something else that will cost then more money. Then the laptop and scanner software is useless once the car is back to normal. That is what I am trying to overcome here with this idea. Not to mention the learning curve required to understand the data.
Let think about it from the forums point of view. Why are we all here. To discuss, and learn about our cars, fix possible problems, learn new ways to mod the cars. The MORE resources this forum has to offer over other forums, the BETTER it become and the MORE people it will attract. That is a win/win situation for everyone. And I hardly think someone should have to justify WHY they would want to bring, what I think would be a great addition, to this forum.
Someone pointed out a system another forum uses and it seems to be in great demand. I think it would be a great opportunity for everyone.
IMHO there is a WHOLE lot more good in the whole scenerio, than bad.
Maybe it's something the Forum itself needs to do instead of an individual forum member. That way the moderators could determine who is eligible to rent the stuff. In essence, the forum would be the "shop" using the software to diagnose the "customer's" problems. The rent for the laptop is the "shop fee."
I think this new idea would work out great. Ive had ski-dwn-it rebun my chip about 6 times already and ive had some troubleshooting problems that needed to be adresses. The infamous code 33 killed me when i had my 383 first built and i couldt get my car to cruise under 2k rpms. I called up jesse, sent him the chip and he raised to levels on the maf code 33 and i never got the code again. I dynoed my car and it went very lean, like 15 to 1. I had jesse reburn the chip and i didnt have it redynoed...but i dropped 3 tenths in the 1/4 with the same exact 60' and same temperatures, and conditions. Recently i was getting a code 34...but that was prolly because i was getting a bad intake leake at the intake gaskets, I didnt get a chance to fix it cause my motor took a crap 2 weeks ago. If i would have had this ease, software it probably could have helped me greatly. I hope this works out because many can benefit from it. later
Just for some clarification Johnny reported that it was his oil pump that failed that caused the motor failure. :cry Doesn't take long for those bearing to get chewed up when there is no oil getting to them. Its a shame too after getting that baby to where it finally was. What were the final ETs on it?
And thanks for the incouragement on this idea.
Well I see it very differently. I see someone wanting something that personally may get little use and looking for a way to get someone else to pay for it. With you add for chips in you signature you should pay to be here.

Ahhh... someone else not afraid to state their opinion. :)

What's your problem? I personally am grateful for forum members like this... These kind of people make it easier for me. I am glad to have them. Jesse is not :spam ing anyone. Please keep this on topic for the people who want to keep this a discussion.
Thanks for the good idea Jesse. I would be glad to help!
:flag
I find it amazing that there are always a few so quick to try to ruin it for others.
Both Scorp and Not stock are both basing their opinions on assumptions.
Not Stock. What even makes you THINK that I would want to use this computer and software for personal use, when I ALREADY have it? Common fellas, come to the plate with something relavant to the topic and stop making assumptions.
It great to hear that some of the people here like the idea and I WILL persue it despite the wet blanket attitudes of some. The voices of one or two do not account for the majority. Emails I have recieved on the idea and IM speak loudest.
Thanks ALL that support the idea. I think it will be a good thing for EVERYONE.
... Be careful if you buy a laptop. I paid over $1000 for this Dell and it has no serial port. Most software requires it. I spent $60 on adaptors. No go. Now Dell tells me I need a Targus port replicator $100. I will get one but Im still not sure it will work. Someone out thereknows what to get maybe they can chime in. :chevy
In all the hullaballoo, I overlooked this. Theoretically, the port replicator should work (but it might be a bit cumbersome) but so should have the adapter cables (assuming you got the correct serial/usb adapter). If you'd like, IM or email me and I'll try to work with you on this....
I really like the idea, being an honest person, that would not even consider the stealing part of this equation. Call it gullible. I have been taken a few times. I would like to think that most of the people on here are decent honest folk. Ski - would you consider allowing forum members to drive to you (the ones close) to use the software under your guidance. I have been considering a chip change also. Not to high jack this thread, but ever since I got my current chip, my torque convertor does not lock up, (no gound on some D pin under the steering column. So I think there are many corvette owners that have some issue that plagues them, that maybe could be found. I know that such issues cause us not to drive our cars or trade them in early. Yes I have had my car at serveral corvette shops. Most don't want to touch a custom chip (*why don't we put the stock back chip in?*)
in my iroc that motor went 11.9@ 114.5 with a 1.66 60' ......but car had soo much more in it. I spun off the line and bounced off that supposed rev limiter i was hitting at 5700-5800 rpms, like 100 ft be4 the finich line. This motor in my gta with the trans i just had built and 3200 stall pi vigilante prolly would have gone 11.40's at 117, all day long. its a shame the motor took a crap. later
He comes here selling chips and manifolds to members who would never know him if not for the forum taking avalable dollars away from paying vendors. This small group is always looking to get a buck out of members without paying their support.
Ski, I believe your idea is in fact a noble concept. I'm not sure if practically this can be accomplished without exposing yourself to undue risk; guess we'll see if anyone comes up with "the perfect plan".
I am relatively new to the Forum. Outside of what I've learned in this forum, I know very little about Corvettes, or cars in general. Since discovering the Forum, I've gained an immense amount of detailed, technical knowledge about my car. I, personally, am grateful for people like Ski (and all the others) who have been so willing to help. I am amazed that such a large group of people are willing to dedicate their time and efforts to helping others out, all the while receiving NOTHING in return! For this, I say "Thank You".
How about buying several adapter cables then renting them out with with some of the freeware scanning software for people that already have notebooks? Maybe just rent the cables for like $10 or so with the person paying shipping and such. That way, someone wouldn't have to pay $100 for the cable and there shouldn't be any licencing or other issues that way. The person could just download the software then. I guess there's decent free or trial period scanning software out there that maybe you could use?
Great idea. I could use it a week from Monday. Want to give it a trial run?
PS. I give thanks to the supporting vendors for their contributions to keep this site up and running. However, until one of them comes out with a new intake for the C4 or offers to let me borrow the necessary electronic equipment to provide accurate feedback on the chip they, OR EVEN SOMEONE ELSE, burned for me I'll not criticize those putting in the time and effort.
In order to stay in business these companies must try to stay ahead of the curve, not many dollars allocated to R&D for C4 products now, and even less when C6 hits the road. Oh, I'm sorry, I just saw a new product for C4's in the "mall", a clear license plate cover  . Go ahead, click on all the tuners to the left and search their sites for L98 motor upgrades, Head, Cam intake packages. You'll find a couple, maybe three, all have been available since the late 80's. Am I to assume that's as good as it gets?
