Default Cam Pin Change

Ok guys I've got a cam from an early style optispark and I now have the late style optispark. When I origionally got the cam I ground the pin down to make it fit. So now I've got to get a new pin. How do you remove them?? and where can I get a new pin from?? Or am I better off just buying a new cam altogether? Oh, by the way it's a TPIS cam if that makes a difference. Thanks

On some cams, the fix you did, can be accomplished by driving the pin further into the cam. My guess is that your shortened pin will have to be replaced. I don't know if you can simply sub in a piece of drill rod or not. I'd be afraid of a hardness problem. Call the cam grinder you got it from. No way, you'd have to buy a cam over THAT. Good luck, and...

What did TPiS say about it? IMHO, if it was me, I'd ditch the TPiS cam and go with CompCams. I've heard many times that the quality control on their cams is not the best... :)

I just got a chance to call TPIS(they are closed weekends) Chris said that I need to get a slide hammer to pull the old pin out and find someone to sell me a new pin, but he didnt know who I should call. Maybe this is going to be more hassle than it's worth. Has someone done this already? I'm sure soneone has.

:iagree: It sure is getting there isn't it? If it were me, I'd sell that thing and talk to CompCams about your setup. Heck, it's only a couple of hundred bucks right? ;)

I am sure, TPIS is merely a re-boxer. Call a cam grinder. Ask about drill rod, or have them send you a pin. This really isn't a lot of hassle, compared to the price of a cam.

Well, if soneone wants the cam I'd do $175 shipped and I can find a new cam somewhere.

TJ, if you could get me that part number that would be great thanks.

I would think a GM pin would work, should be obtainable from a dealer. They are a bit of a bitch to get out but not that big of a deal. I change cam pins in Detroit Diesels frequently as they are bad to bend them if someone previously didn't torque the cam gear bolt properly. I just lock on some vise grips real tight and tap on the vise grips with a brass hammer. A regular hammer will work too if you don't mind beating up your vise grips! The vise grips may slip off a couple of times but it'll come!

Here is what I beleive the cam pin part number is: 10214481

Double check with your dealer before ordering. I am 99% sure that is what it is. I saved the bag from when I bought one a few years back. :)

I checked with my GM buddy the number changed to 10214485 :) fits all F, Y and B cars 95 to 97 with LT1 engines. Early cars take a different pin.
