Default Brake Question

I was driving my 86 coupe last night and without warning, the brake pedal went down farther than usual when i went to stop. It didn't go all the way down but it scared the ---- out of me. I could pump it once and get full pedal.
Here's the weird part, as I was returning home it started working normally , full pedal everytime.
I checked the fluid and it's up to normal level. Also, no ABS light or any other warning. I can't see any leaks. The previous owner replaced the Brake booster (don't know when) . Could it be the booster going bad? Why the intermittent behavior? Anyone esle had this problem? I don't plan to drive it until I figure out what is going on. All help is appreciated

Default Re: Brake Question (dwestsr)

 Not sure I can give you specifics, just some generalities!

Vacuum leaks and or a bad "booster" will usually always result in a hard pedal

A pedal going to the floor or going soft, is usually always a Master cylinder/ wheel Cylinder problem.

ABS might, very slight IMHO, be a concern..what year did you say it was? Abs will relieve brake pressure to either the rear axle or the two front wheels which may feel like pedal going soft, but usually with ABS, pedal will pulsate.

If I had to guess, I would guess MC! Have you ever flushed the brake fluid? I do this at least annually. Fluid can pick up dirt or moisture and under certain conditions, moisture can boil off and the pedal could go soft

Thanks Jackdaroofer, I think I will start by flushing the brake fluid. BTW is an 86. I would rather it be a problem with the MC than the booster.
