for me anyway i cant feel from a couple degres to the next its just track g-tech or dyno numbers hard data.by the way just got mine 383 in tinkered with timeing by ear and im glad i didnt run it had 25advance :banghead:
Think about it's NAME. It is a knock SENSOR. It is not a knock anticipator. It hears nothing, it does nothing.
speak up guys, can you feel the timing being pulled or do you need to hook into the knock sensor?
I don't know if you will feel it or not. Mine has never worked properly. BUT... The ESC and the ECM team up and over compensate. It pulls more spark than it has to and keeps it retarded (slow?) longer than it has to. Performance wise, it does not pay to activate the knock sensor. If you keep advancing until the 1/4 mile mphs (a horsepower indicator) start to drop off, you'll have it.
As it is right now, I can't even run the stock 6 degrees initial without hitting off the knock sensor. I think I'm a bit lean yet and need to bump up my fuel pressure. A lean mixture is more prone to detonation. It only knocks for a moment just before a 5000+ RPM shift. But it still bugs me.
Since the knock sensor works immediately upon hearing knock and since a tiny bit of knock once-in-awhile probably won't hurt a street engine, IMO, I believe the knock sensor is a good safe-guard.
When my engine was stock, I liked 8 degrees.
One more thing. Sometimes the knock is inaudible and only a scanner or ALDL/PC interface with the accompanying software can detect it (I bought mine off EBay). Just because you don't hear a knock doesn't necessarily mean it's not there.

One more thing. Just because the sensor perceives a knock doesn't mean one is there. Sometimes loud exhaust, a loose bracket, a vibration etc. will make it think there is a knock. I believe a dyno, chasis or rolling is the best indicator. along with common sense that is.
