Im under the impression a 'high volume' pump is the same as a high pressure pump. that true? my builder said he has a high pressure pump with my canton setup...

That is true, they are different. The high volume pump is actually capable of flowing more oil through the pump. However, there is pressure relief spring which is used to bleed off excess pressure if the pump builds too much pressure. The high pressure spring has a stiffer spring in it which allows the system to develop more pressure. Keep in mind, however, that higher pressure does not necessarily mean better oiling. When we set up the oil systems in the NASCAR motors, we care far more about flow than pressure, though pressure can be an indicator of flow. For example, we try to set the systems up to develop 10 lbs of oil pressure for every 1000 rpm up to 5000 rpm. The relief spring is calibrated to start bleeding off pressure above 50 psi, because above 5000 rpm and 50 psi, the extra pressure doesn't help oiling, but takes power to create.

Here are the pics I promised regarding the oil pump housing and pickup mods. I apologize for the blurry pics. I didn't know they were blurry until I got home, and the engine shop is 30 minutes away. Hopefully you can still see the mods well enough.
