What a difference! The first photo is my old intake which looked about the same as my stock one I just had cleaned up. All of these parts are the originals from my '85. I wish I'd taken more 'before' pictures for comparison.
Who knows how to seal in the finish after glass beading? I have read not to use a clear coat laquer because it will turn yellow.
The nice part? The shop here locally charged $40 for all of it, including the steam cleaning beforehand. I'll post a couple more pics when it's all put back together.
Looks great!
Did the glassbeader tape closed the intake tracts? If not, make sure to blow out with compressed air beads that have gotten in the EGR passages under the intake tracts.
The TPIS intake didn't get cleaned?
Re: Glass bead blasting finished...Pics! (89 Paul in Cal)
i was thinkin about coating some clean metal parts and was wondering what to use myself. i was thinking about power coating. do they make a clear powercoating? would it be a slick finish or would it have a texture? i'd like to polish up some wheels and have em clear powercoated which should hold up really well. anybody know anything about this? can it be done?
Yes there is a clear powdercoat although I've never seen it used on bare metal. I've seen people use it on existing powder coat just to give it a more durable, shiny finish.

I think people are using it on bare metal, now.
Also, some of the jet hot coatings may help. There are tons of coatings out there... just need to pick the right one!
Don’t go with hi-temp clear paint it will yellow, mine did. I would look into some of the powder coatings, they even have colors that look like the glass bead finish.
On another note I purchased a bead blast cabinet from Barrel Blaster (I use glass bead), it’s great to have in the garage, I blast everything. Check it out at $300 it's a great tool.
Now I know why you weren't at the track Friday for the seasons Street Legal points opener. Are you going to make it for the Summit ET Bracket points opener this Friday? That stuff is looking good.
The problem I found with sandblasting my intake, was the surface was so soft afterwards, it scuffed very easily. I knocked it down with a brass brush which helped.. but larger media is the solution. Not sure how large those glass beads were, but you almost need to shot peen the thing to get a good non-porous surface.
If you want to put a clear coating on clean metal parts you need to get a product called Pelucid. It is made by POR-15. I just did my intake on my Chevelle. I am also doing my aluminum valve covers. It is a hard coating that has a gloss to it. It is AWESOME. Dirt slides right off. Clean up is a snap. Supposedly it is super durable. it is expensive, but hey...it looks worth every penny.
I decided to do a powdercoating on them roughly the same color as they are now. The shop here locally that can do them can also put a clear powdercoating on them as well. They don't think it turns yellow but who knows.

I'll have to check and see what kind of clear powdercoating these guys use. I'm skeptical. Does $100-$150 to do all of the powder/clear coating sound reasonable?
[EDIT] I'm also quite hesitant to do anything powdercoated or clear powdercoated on the throttle body. It seems risky. How else though can you get it all to match? [/EDIT]

RACE ON!!!
Hey EFI! I will be working on the car this weekend putting it all back together. I'm masking parts right now in preparation for powdercoating and they will be done on Friday.
I hope to see you up there one of these weekends. I have a brother who bought a Subaru WRX. It's surprisingly peppy, he wants to go up and drag against the vette. Sounds like fun!
