OK I've already done the obvious by replacing the burn off relays but the service engine light is still there. I found a wire rubbing through in the MAF wire harness so I spliced it back together and the light and code are still there. I ordered a test harness so I can check the MAF but it didn't include what the sensor should be reading. So if anyone out there has a service manual for a '88, and would be kind enough to give me the info needed, I would be very greatful. I'll even email you a beer for helping  .
On an 87. The ECM supplies a current limiting 5-volt source on the signal line, and the MAF sensor pulls the voltage low (about .4V) with low air flow and up to about 5 volts with high air flow such as WOT. But the code thrown if the sensor fails is a 33 or 34. Hope this helps. ;) Also, you need to disconnect your battery for a few minutes to clear the code :seeya
Vaccuum leaks can actually trigger that code too. But if you replaced both relays and there are no shorts or leaks, it would then probably be the MAF itself.
There is an outside chance that its the ECM, but way outside.
Hey Buddy,
Did the green wire at the harness break? Is that the one you fixed?
Did you erase the code after your repairs to make sure its gone?(disconnect the battery for a few)
Just asking the simple stuff before going further.
:)
Hey Bill, How ya been?? Well I removed the smog equipment and when I did that it left the perfect spot for my maf wires to drop down and rub on the upper pulley. I'm not sure which one it was. Its also possible that I didn't get it spliced back together good enough. Man I hate wiring.
Hey man,
Been doing allright, thanks for asking.Just real busy as always.
Go check the wires carefully to make sure they all good and the tight.
Damn MAF sensors can be an expensive guess to replace at times.
Be sure to clear the codes when youre done.
ABout the cruise In,i have no idea.My vette isnt anywhere near done yet and I havent signed up...so really dont know whats in store yet. Will let ya know.
I gave the wires a good pull when I was done splicing them back together( used butt connectors). I've got a friend with an '88 also, so I think I'm going to swipe his and see if that makes any difference. And I left it sit for about 3 hours with the battery unplugged last night, as soon as I hooked it back up and started the engine, it came right back. I think I'll go check the codes again and see if 33 was the only one. I know the wires were grounding out on the pulley and throwing a few sparks, maybe I did some damage to the MAF when that happened. But being 16 years old, I guess might be about time for it to go anyway. Thanks Bill let me know if you decide on the Cruise In. Hug that beautiful wife and kids for me! :jester
