Default AFR Heads

I have been thinking lately of getting some new heads. I'm an amature so I'm not sure which way to go. It's a daily driver and I just want more power (who doesn't). I looked at the AFR 180cc LT1 head and also the Edelbrock #61909 LT1 heads. I'm new at this so I would like some input.

I would also be doing the cam with it. Thanks guys.

Look in the archives for more information, there will be a ton of it. A lot of people around here like the AFR heads.

I just got done doing this job (cam/heads) and let me tell you - it's a big job! I decided to get my LT-1 heads worked over versus purchasing the non-competition LT-1 heads from AFR.

If you do the work yourself, budget an additional 10-20% for the hidden costs above and beyond the component purchases.

Hey thanks guys...Hey black sheep, was that why you decided to work the stock heads? I assume these heads are ready made for the LT1 and should not require re-working other parts on the stock engine. I'm an amature so I'm only guessing.

I will not be doing the work myself so down time on my daily driver is important. Re-working my stock heads will take more time then purchasing heads and bolting them on (I guess).

You're correct, they should be a direct bolt-on if purchased through AFR. You can get two "types" of heads through them:

- The normal LT-1 castings you're looking at
- Competition ported LT-1 heads

Based on the info I've gathered, the normal castings will not give you the air flow you're looking for where the competition ported heads will. The competition ported heads go for around $2,500.00.

When I found this out, I decided to just have my existing LT-1 heads ported. I think that they (my CNC ported stock heads) will outflow the "normal" AFR LT-1 heads (although I haven't proved it by flow benching my heads vs. the normal AFR LT-1 heads).

Take it for what it's worth as it's just my opinion based on my own research into the subject.

You'll also want to do your homework when it comes to cam selection. It may be in your best interest to try and find a package deal where the cam is matched to the heads. This will give you the most bang for your buck and will lead to less headaches after the swap.

Good luck! :)

Forget that, check this out http://tpis.com/, click on "engine developement", scroll down and you'll see TPIS/AFR heads for both L98's and LT1's, they flow like competition-ported AFR 190's, they are running a sale right now I think, normally $1,850 but now $1,750.
These just might be the ticket for you

Actually, he was talking about the heads directly from AFR. If he can get LT-1 heads from TPiS that flow better than or out do the competition AFR castings, by all means, go for it!

As always, be careful about advertised flow numbers - TPiS has it in their best interest to advertise their heads flowing just as good if not better than AFR competition heads.
