My 85 will spin but won't catch. During start, I can hear a slight poping at the exhaust. Very minute poping. I set ignition timing with No.1 piston at TDC and the distributor rotor pointing towards the No.1 spark plug wire. I measured 40+lbs of fuel pressure on start. Spark plugs are wet with fuel.
Any ideas?
Is that finger tight with the lock nut or spinning pushrod ?
If your confident with your adjustment than I would look at spark plub wiring and initial static timing.

Really? I looked in the number one spark plug hole and could swear I could see the piston top when I set the rotor.
TDC compression happens once every two revs. If you don't verify that it's on compression stoke, you could be 180 out. Put your finger in the hole and turn it over till you feel the pressure and then line up the mark on the balancer.

Yes but the #1 piston is at TDC twice once for compresion and once for exhast sroke. The only way to tell is to pull the valve cover. The compresion stroke will hapen rite after the intake valve close. BTW I think you are way to tight on the R/Rs as well should be between 1/4 and 1/2 turn past zero lash 1 full turn is to much
Your grip could be stronger than you think
Are these stock rockers or roller ?
There're full roller rockers. Would that matter?
No, I just found it easier to set rollers as the nut can be turned by hand to remove lash. The stockers are a stover type lock nut and a ratchet is needed, thereby eliminating any real feel.
Not sure but I think the GM manual specs one turn.
They do and they are wrong. I can tell you if you go 1 full turn past zero lash with R/Rs it will probably run but your valves are probably not closing all the way either.
here is a link that explains it fairly well http://www.centuryperformance.com/valveadjustment.asp
