1988 - any problems with using scanning software ? 160 or 8192baud?
The Laptop and cable were verified working on an 84 but won't work on my 88.
I can check sys codes manually with the paperclip method and have tested the relevant plug holes in the ALDL socket, using led's showing there is transmission of some sort active there.
I've verified that the cable is making good connection.
Is anyone with an 88 using Win ALDL or had trouble ?
I'm told that the Win ALDL program works on 160baud, and that from 86 on both 160 and 8192baud were available.
I don't know enough about this stuff, so I'm hoping other with 88 vette's can tell me what scanning software works on their cars.
thanks

Anyhow, if you know the cable is correct and should work, did you place a 10K Ohm resistor across pins A & B of the ALDL?
Yes the resistor is there. Brown/Black/Orange/Gold.
A friend with an 84 made the cable for me. We tested the cable and my laptop on his 84 and everything worked.
I get no response from my 88.
My friend told me a way to test my ALDL socket using led's and there was some action at the pin outs proving a connection to the ECM.
I installed Win ALDL on a borrowed, almost new, laptop and still nothing.
I've just borrowed a 8192baud comm cable and got the free Moates software. Hoping that perhaps the 88 needs a higher speed connection.
Unfortunately when I went to connect up last night, there was no serial port in our brand new laptop to plug the cable into!!!!!
Things seem to be getting worse, not better.
I'd appreciate any info on any of this -

They did change, not sure when or why. On my 86 it's "E"
Does anyone know which to use for an 88 ?
BTW, I read the sad story about your vette protector, great looking animal. Sorry for your loss.

I followed the instructions on the website for the cable. I have one wire going to A and one to E with a 10k resistor between A and B. i used the 2N3904 transistor (if i remember correctly). I dont use R4.

I didnt change any settings on my laptop to get this to work so whatever the default was worked fine. In WinALDL i see the little box up top blink every second or so with a value of 25. If you get red blinks or none at all its probably a bad connection @ the diag. terminal.
I've got one of those "code scanners" (or paperclip in plastic) that blinks your check engine light, i think ill wire my cable to that thing so it stays in the diag. term. better :P.
hope it helps or at least gives you the hope that it will work someday. If you arent convinced and want pictures, let me know and ill take some. it should just work though.

So far I've had no luck getting a connection. My ALDL socket has the following wires -
A Black/white stripe
B White/ Black stripe
C Brown
E Orange
F Tan/black strip
G Red
I have the service manuals and have spent ages looking for the ALDL socket to check if a wire is in the wrong hole or missing. I'm sure I've have seen it in the electrrical manual so am now going through it page by page - I'll be an expert on everything when I'm finished !
I recently got the 8192 baud cable to use with Moates software, it has 4 wires, one going to 'M' but I have no wire there.
I think this means I don't have 8192 signal ?

Here is some good info
Please note: Biggest FAQ: Why won't it connect? Here's a short list
of the most common reasons:
1) Check your defaults options (menu item 8) and make sure your
ECM type (165 or 730) is properly selected.
2) Make sure your default setting is in the 'Diagnostic ECM Mode',
because the program is 'shipped' in the 'Offline' mode. Offline mode is
just so you can navigate through the program without having an interface
to the car connected.
3) Check your circuit connections. If you need a power supply make sure
it's connected. If you have a 165 MAF ECM, make sure you have a 10k
resistor installed between ALDL pins A&B.
4) Go into your PC's BIOS and disable any IR/DA port stuff, and make
sure your COM ports are subsequently enabled.
5) Don't use WinXP, WinNT or anything like that. The program likes
MSDOS, Win95, and Win98.
The Moates cable came from MaStach.com and is for TPI GM OBD1 so I'm assuming it has the resistor between A and B
(The Win ALDL cable has the resistor and 3 wires - but that's been proven to work on an 84)
Thanks for the FAQ info, I'll check all that out. I did go to options and changed to 'Online' and selected my ECM type of 165.
Number 4 is tricky, I've never been into the BIOS. I'm unsure where to start.
Our old laptop was Win NT, but the WIN ALDL program and cable on it worked on an 84.
Our new laptop is Win XP but there's no serial port ! Until I confirm that I have communication between my car and a computer, I'm driving around to my nephew and using his new laptop which does have a serial port but is Win XP - so it's not very convenient.
Am I just wasting my time trying with Win XP ?

Good Luck
I'm borrowing the XP laptop for 2 days, to instal some virus software (but mainly so I can have more time with it and my car.)
Looks like I should give up on the Moates and try and get WinALDL to work. As I mentioned before, Win ALDL, the old laptop that had a serial port and the Win ALDL cable all worked on an 84 but wouldn't in mine.
The problem must be in my car. The paperclip test works fine and so does the digital dash - which from memory verifies that the three wires A B and E are all working.
It's a frustrating mystery.
