I'm having a 383 stroker engine built. I now have a procharger D1 pushing 9 lbs of boost and realize I have to get the CR down in the 8's. Any suggestions on an engine kit and heads? I'm putting TPIS long tube headers on, it has a 3000 stall converter and 375 rearend. It is a 1990.
Check out Eagle for economy kits, Lunati also has great quality kits as well. Or you can choose your own components as well. Cola, Lunati, Callies, Scat, and Eagle are some of the well known crankshaft vendors. SRP, JE, Ross, Venolia are a few of the well know piston vendors as well. Call you local performance machine shop for some guidance in selecting the parts you will need. If there isn't an off the shelf piston any of the above piston manufacturers can build a set for you.
Re: best setup for a supercharged 383 (pffsvette) You have many options for you out there.
It shouldn't be hard to lower that compression just a shorter rod or a (negative dish piston should do). It gets a little more prices though because most lower end combination kits are set up for the standard compression. So you may have to have get things seperate. It is possible to make 8 though with a kit. You just need the orginal Combustion chamber spaced heads. Most corvettes had 76cc heads.
I myself am going with afr heads and a eagle rotating assembly. The afr heads have a nice 3/4'' head deck which is supposedly great for blown or jucing your engine. I'm probably only going to run 7 lbs so i can maintain stock compression. But i'm also going EFI so i'll be able to control my spark with extra control (no detonation here).
I agree w/TJWong...there are a lot of good kits out there...just figure out your target power level and work with your engine builder to get the right combination. Unless you're looking to make +800 rwhp, I'd probably go with a little more CR...say 9:1 to 9.5:1. Also, I've never been that fond of TPIS headers...just my $0.02.
Thanks guys, am doing a JTWong suggested and going with AFR heads. Will let you know how it comes out. If I can figure out how to do pictures (no techno boy), I'll post some. '90 black on black convertible with some custom upholstery and 2000 wheels. Looks good, now if I can get it to run well.
You can't go wrong with the AFR heads. When you get ready to get a set of them heads, call Dave at AFR tell him your combo and he will help you choose the right heads for your car.
Be careful with your total CR. I have this setup in my 383L SC vette and I made darn sure my total compression didn't exceed 10. I even built an intercooler and ran 3 inch tubing to keep the charge cool. Detonation is by far your biggest enemy here. I recommend hooking up an EGT/wideband/boost gauge panel to careful tune/run your engine until you get the AFR /timing just right. A little more of this or that will come into play as you get closer to your performance goals. I'm running ROSS forged pistons/gapless rings among other goodies so the engine is a little more foregiving as I fine tune it. Don't forget the blowoff valve and you might find a need for a engine vacuum pump/relief valve to keep the crankcase pressure even keel when your getting on it.
Don't forget to change the engine oil after 50 miles of inital engine breakin and be sure to cut open the oil filter to look for abnormal metal particles.
Don't forget to document your project by taking pictures along the way.....they're always a great conversation piece when smoking a good cuban cigar and drinking a beer with your buddies!
Thanks to TJWong. Talked to Dave in L.A. and he said to put 210 cc with a 76cc chamber. He said "that good ole Thomas". Any way, it takes 4 to 6 weeks to get them but from what I understand they are worth the wait. I'll update as things progress.
