Default Changing out the PCM

I received my PCM from PCMforLess yesterday. I used the exchange option so I have not taken mine off yet. (Not to mention that the Vette is in the shop getting a new engine) I was wondering if there is any kind of "trick" to removing the old PCM and replacing it with the new one. Or...is it just as easy as it seems to do? Thanks!

its pretty simple.
the one thing I would mention is that there are metal clip's on the connectors, they need to be pryed up in order to disconnect the wiring harness plugins.
they basically act as a fail safe to keep the plugins from falling out.
oh, and you'll have to swap out your old memcal into the new ECM.

memcal is inside the ECM, its under the small cover plate (your new one is probably covered with tape). you remove the plate (two screws) then inside you will see a plastic gizmo, this is the memcal, it has the e-prom and limp home chips inside it (if you want just think of it as the chip). each memcal is programed for a specific vehicle so you have to transfer it to the new ECM.
its simple to do, there is a latch at each end, you push the latchs out and down and this will unlock and also push out the memcal for you.
you simply push the memcal into the new ECM (it should only go in one way but make sure you have it lined up correctly) the latches will come up and lock it in when its ingaged.

Yes, it is as easy as it seems, and the 96 pcms didn't have a removable memcal. Just plug, tighten, and play.

:iagree:

94 and up DO NOT use memcals, all the data is flash into built in fixed, non removable flash memory.

Its just plug and play.......lesson complete.......:D

Hmmm, how does this affect the vehicles odometer reading? I thought that was unique to each unit and was not necessarily "transferrable" to another unit (96 for example), unless done "by a dealer"?

Odometer mileage and the VIN # is stored in the CCM.

absolutely..........CCM keeps track of the mileage.........ECM is a dummy module with a serial link to the ECM to tell it what to do......i.e. VATS, ignition lockout, etc

While there is not a memcal in the PCM there is a knock module that is located under the trap door of the PCM. Besure to remove yours and install it into your exchange PCM. Just remove the two 1/4" hex head screws, pop the cover off and squeeze the knock module retainer cliip and pull up. Thats about all there is to it.
