Default Steering noises

I was recently on a long mtn cruise with other forum members, about 100 miles of very challenging ywisty turnies. I noticed about 3/4 of the way thru thta I was getting some "whining" noises on each turn. After the run the noises went away. I checked my steering fluid and well, frankly, it looks like mud. I would guess that a steering fluid change is needed. Has anyone done this (Im sure someone has) and if so what advice would you give me? Just drain the reservoir and refill it? Ive searched and not found any specific procedures for this. Any advice would be appreciated. Thx!

I did the "turkey baster" routine.

Suck the steering fluid out [turkey baster or any other suction thing].

Fill up with new fluid, Run the car a few days or miles, the fluid will circulate.

Do this about 3 or 4 times & the fluid will be completely changed. :steering:

I pulled the fuse for fuel pump and ran engine dry. I then pulled the return line off of resevoir and directed it to a container. Cranked engine over for a few seconds and then added more fluid. I did this over and over till the return fluid looked new. You could also add a hard left and right turn in the process to get almost all of it out.

Ok, I snagged a turkey baster from the kitchen and headed to the garage, lol. The fluid I just bought is clear. I pulled out as much as I could and filled it up with new fluid. Then I drove it a few miles and sucked out as much as I could and it looked almost as muddy as the first time. This will take a few times Im sure. But I can already "feel" a difference. The steering is noticably smoother. Not that it felt "bad" before---its just smoother now. Thanks for the info.

In addition to changing your fluid a lubricant might help. I would try adding graphite to the fluid and turn the wheel several times left and right. I have used this method to rid the whine before on other cars. It actually works, if your pump is not too far gone. :A trick I learned from the old guys. :

I put a quart of Lucas oil treatment power steering lubricant and sealer.

Don't forget to bleed the system after the change.
